Mobile Phones from Sony Ericsson to Get Better Exchange Server 2003 Connectivity

Published: February 8, 2006

by Alex Woodie

Users of Sony Ericsson mobile phones will not only be able to download e-mail, but access their calendar and contact lists from their cell phones, as a result of a new licensing agreement Sony signed with Microsoft this week.

By licensing the Exchange ActiveSync protocol for Exchange Server 2003, users of the new Sony Ericsson P990 and M600 phones will gain direct connect capabilities to data housed on Exchange Server 2003 e-mail servers. What's more, organizations deploying Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 will be able to get instant access to new e-mails, a feature Microsoft calls "Direct Push."

The ActiveSync protocol licensing deal with Sony Ericsson is the latest for Microsoft, which has already deals with DataViz, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, and Symbian. The Sony Ericsson P990 and M600 phones are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2006.
