IBM Expected to Launch New BladeCenters This Week

Published: February 8, 2006

by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM is hosting a big server event in New York tomorrow and is widely expected to roll out a new BladeCenter blade server chassis and new blade servers, which presumably cope with heating and cooling issues better than the old blades did. The power density in IBM and Hewlett-Packard blade servers is very high, and this is causing heating issues in data centers that were never designed for so much power consumption and heat in a small space.

The word on the street is that IBM will roll out new PowerPC-based blades, running both Linux and AIX, and may even discuss its plans for putting the Cell PowerPC variant in the BladeCenter for use as workstations and HPC servers.

IBM is also expected to make other server and storage announcements, and I will give you the scoop after I get back from the event.
