Microsoft Says It Is Making Strides in Boosting Security

Despite today's constantly evolving security threats, progress is being made at Microsoft to boost the security in Windows, as well as third-party programs, Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates said at the RSA Security Conference 2005 event in San Francisco last week. In addition to providing an update on the Trustworthy Computing initiative, Gates outlined new security features in the upcoming releases of Windows Server 2003 SP1 and R2, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Microsoft Update. IBM Plans X3 "Hurricane" Chipset for Xeon Servers

IBM this week began to talk about its third generation of chipsets for midrange and high-end X86 servers. The first-generation "Summit" EXA and second-generation "Summit-II" chipsets have helped IBM grow revenue and shipment market share in the high-end X86 server space, and with the "Hurricane" X3 chipset, due within a few months, the company hopes to push the X86 higher into the server market while at the same time getting a larger slice of the four-way server market. Egenera Adds Opterons, Upgrades BladeFrame

Under a partnership announced two weeks ago, chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices has garnered another server maker that will support its Opteron processors, and blade server maker Egenera has another arrow in its quiver with which to attack the vast installed base of Unix servers in the world. Egenera says it will deliver Opteron-based blades for its BladeFrame systems within the next 30 days. Egenera also put out Release 4.0 of its PAN Manager BladeFrame management software. Intel, AMD Launch New X86 Chips

Chip makers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices used the LinuxWorld expo in Boston last week as the launching pads for their new 64-bit X86 processors.
