Microsoft Founds Business Process Alliance, Commits to BPEL 2.0

Microsoft this week announced the formation of a new industry group dedicated to furthering the state of business process management (BPM). The new group, called the Microsoft Business Process Alliance (BPA), debuted with 10 members. The software giant also announced changes in .NET Framework 3.0 to support new BPM standards.
BPM encompasses a range of technologies and disciplines that deal with how best to architect, deploy, and monitor next-generation business applications for resiliency, accessibility, and extensibility. With such a diverse range of vendors offering BPM tools and so many competing standards, it is, at best, a very confusing topic to delve into, which is why it's probably a good idea that groups like the BPA are being formed.
According to Microsoft, the BPA was created in response to feedback from customers concerning their BPM needs. The software giant says the new group will tackle these specific areas: business process modeling and analysis; business rules management; human-centric workflow; process simulation; and service oriented architecture (SOA) life-cycle management.
The 10 vendors that have joined the BPA include: AmberPoint, a developer of SOA runtime governance solutions; Ascentn, the developer of the AgilePoint SOA and BPM toolsets; IDS Scheer, a provider of corporate governance and compliance software and services; Fair Isaac, developer of the FISA credit rating software and fraud-detection software; Global360, a provider of BPM software; InRule, a developer of .NET-based business rules engine software; Metastorm, a provider of BPM software; PNMsoft, a provider of BPM and business workflow software; RuleBurst, a provider of business rules and risk management software; and
Microsoft also announced that it's made changes to the Windows Workflow Foundation in the version 3.0 release of the .NET Framework to support the upcoming Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) version 2.0 standard. BPEL is one of the key technologies in BPM and SOA because it is the executable format used in the delivery of many Web services.
Microsoft made the announcements from the Gartner Business Process Management Summit, which is being held this week in rainy San Diego, California.
