Microsoft Announces New Phone Software for Small Businesses

Microsoft is developing new Windows-based telephone software that it says will make it easier for small businesses to manage their own phone systems, the software giant revealed Monday. Plans call for the new system, called Response Point, to work with traditional PBX gear as well as newer IP-based phone equipment from major manufacturers, and to ship later this year.

The new Response Point offering will be a PC-based product that streamlines many of the aspects of phone system management, such as adding a phone for a new employee or creating a distribution list, according to Microsoft. Other features include integrated voicemail, voicemail-to-e-mail-forwarding, incoming call notifications on PC, and integration with Outlook contact lists.

The software, which is currently undergoing beta tests, is being designed to work with telephones and thin client "base units" produced by three manufacturers: D-Link, Quanta, and Uniden. The handsets and base units must conform to Response Point specifications to enable certain functions, including the capability to press a button on the handset to initiate a call to a phone number in the company directory or in the user's Outlook contact list.
