Microsoft Sales Up in Third Quarter, but Profits Fell

If the growing revenues of Microsoft are any indication, then business is on a modest upswing and the IT industry might be recovering to a level of predictable (but not large) profits. Microsoft announced its fiscal third quarter financial results last week, and both revenues and profits were up smartly. However, net income was impacted negatively as Microsoft shelled out billions of dollars to settle a number of huge lawsuits. READ MORE >

 

Microsoft Says Longhorn Server Is Coming

As part of its review of its financial results with Wall Street analysts last week, Microsoft's chief financial officer, John Connors, confirmed that the company would indeed launch a server version of its future "Longhorn" kicker to the current Windows 2003 Server operating system. Opteron Learning to Walk, Ready to Run

The 64-bit, X86-compatible Opteron processor turned one year old last week, and Advanced Micro Devices hosted a big shindig to celebrate at the Rainbow Room in New York. I was too busy doing a hundred other things to goof off and go to the party, but I have spent some time with AMD in recent weeks to put together a picture of where the Opteron is going in the server market.
