Microsoft Ships Public Beta of Virtual Machine Manager
Published: May 2, 2007

Microsoft last week unveiled the release of System Center Virtual Machine Manager Beta 2, the first public release of the new virtualization product, which previously went by the codename "Carmine" and is slated for release in the second half of 2007 along with the next version of Windows Server, which still goes by its codename, "Longhorn."
System Center Virtual Machine Manager is being developed in parallel with the Windows Server Virtualization hypervisor, codename "Viridian," and will provide the interface necessary for controlling the hypervisor. Virtual Machine Manager will focus on helping administrators define policies about resource usage and performance, and is a critical part of Microsoft's virtualization strategy.
In addition to working with Viridian, Virtual Machine Manager will also work with Microsoft's existing Virtual Server product line, which will eventually be overtaken by the Viridian hypervisor layer that Microsoft is developing for Longhorn. Virtual Machine Manager will integrate with Microsoft's System Center suite of tools and feature the same look and feel, Microsoft says.
Beta 2 brings several enhancements, including a new, yet familiar interface to Operations Manager 2007, Service Desk, and System Center Essentials; a new physical-to-virtual (P2V) conversions feature for converting physical Windows Server 2000 or Windows Server 2003 environments to virtual ones; a new virtual-to-virtual (V2V) conversion feature that will use the Windows PowerShell interface to convert virtual machines created using VMWare's software to virtual standards; support for 64-bit servers with VMM; the capability to remotely install every VMM component, including the VMM server, library server, delegated provisioning portal, administrative console and data store; and better performance and scalability.
