Yesterday at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates announced the addition of several new hardware and software partners to Microsoft's Windows Home Server program.
Microsoft announced Windows Home Server, a new operating system unveiled earlier this year as a way to solve many of the integration and backup and recovery headaches suffered by digital households with an accumulation of PCs and other devices. By automatically backing up files stored across several PCs onto the Home Server's hard disks, consumers can rest easy knowing their documents, photos, music, and video clips are stored safely.
When Microsoft introduced Home Server in January, Hewlett-Packard was the primary OEM on board with the new program. Yesterday, Gates announced the edition of three more players--including PC vendor Gateway, drive maker La Cie, and Medion, a manufacturer of multimedia PCs, to the Home Server program.
Microsoft also announced a collection of software developers who will be providing application for Windows Home Server. The companies include: Diskeeper, Embedded Automation, F-Secure, Iron Mountain, Lagotek, PacketVideo, Riptopia, and SageTV.
Lastly, Microsoft unveiled its Code2Fame Challenge, a contest of sorts for providers of hardware and software for the Windows Home server. More information about the contest can be found at www.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver/challenge.
