Bye Bye Bill
by Alex Woodie

Some people call it retirement. Some, like former San Diego Chargers' linebacker Junior Seau, refer to it as 'graduation.' For Bill Gates, who will cease working as a full-time employee of Microsoft this Friday, the day will mark a 'transition.' Regardless of what you call it, it marks the end of an era for one of the most profitable companies in history, and the start of a new era, one with a lot of questions. READ MORE >

Supercomputers' Need for Speed Satisfied with Windows HPC Server '08
by Alex Woodie

Microsoft impressed the supercomputing community last week when a beta of its new Windows High Performance Computing (HPC) Server 2008 scored a top 25 ranking on the Top 500 list of world's biggest supercomputers. The new HPC Server 2008, which is due to hit the first Release Candidate stage by Monday, has also been clocked at 2 microseconds of latency between nodes using the new NetworkDirect interface and InfiniBand cards and switches--an impressive feat for any supercomputer. Patches? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Patches: Survey
by Alex Woodie

People aren't applying Windows patches from Microsoft, according to a new survey released yesterday by anti-malware software vendor Sophos. The study found that 63 percent of corporate PCs surveyed were missing at least one patch that addressed vulnerabilities in Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, or Macromedia Flash, providing 'low-hanging fruit' for cybercriminals to exploit, Sophos says. But others say there's no way to keep up with all the patches, and that they don't always protect you, anyway. READ MORE >

Windows Boss Discusses 'Downgrade Rights' for XP, Windows 7 Compatibility
by Alex Woodie

Despite the brouhaha over XP's end-of-life and what some view as a forced marched to a still-green Windows Vista, Microsoft refused to yield, and will end most (but not all) XP sales on Monday. In a letter to Windows users, Bill Veghte, the head of the Windows division, explained that customers can exercise their "downgrade rights" to move back to XP, but stressed that most users should stick with Vista. He also commented on how the episode is affecting developers' ability to address compatibility issues with Windows 7. READ MORE >

The Top 500 Super Ranking Now Counts Watts as Well as Flops
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The 31st edition of the semi-annual Top 500 listing of supercomputers in the world was announced last week at the International Supercomputing Conference 2008 event in Dresden, Germany, and the list will be noteworthy for two reasons. First, this will be the first time that a supercomputer of any make, vendor, or architecture has broken through the petaflops performance barrier, a feat accomplished by the 'Roadrunner' hybrid Opteron-Cell machine created for the U.S. government's Los Alamos National Laboratory by IBM. And second, and perhaps foremost, this will be the first ranking where watts are being counted for big machines in a manner that is as consistent as the Linpack Fortran benchmark that is the touchstone for performance.
