Microsoft Releases June CTP of Windows Server 2008

Published: June 27, 2007

by Alex Woodie

Microsoft this week issued a new Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the upcoming Windows Server 2008 operating system. As expected, Microsoft has added the Internet Information Services (IIS) 7 Web server to the list of "Server Core" functions that will be available with the new operating system.

One of the most intriguing features of the upcoming Windows Server 2008 release is the addition of the Server Core option. By installing only the components needed to accomplish a given task, Microsoft hopes to reduce the complexity and attack surface of its server operating system, thereby making it more secure and easier to manage.

So far, Microsoft has announced plans to support several roles with Server Core, including Active Directory, file serving, DHTTP, and DNS workloads. With the June CTP of the operating system, the company has added HTTP workloads to the list. The addition of the new IIS 7 Web server to the Server Core function was first revealed by Bob Muglia during his keynote address at the Tech Ed 2007 conference in Orlando, Florida, earlier this month

The June CTP is available only to MSDN Subscribers, TechNET Subscribers, and Connect customers, according to Microsoft. The previous iteration of the operating system, Beta 3, was the first product available for download by the general public. Since Beta 3 became available in late April, it has been downloaded more than 200,000 times.

When Beta 3 was delivered, Microsoft said it was "feature complete." However, the addition of IIS 7 to the Server Core function suggests Microsoft is not done innovating with Windows Server 2008. The addition of IIS 7 to the Server Core function was the only new feature delivered with the June CTP.
