Micro-Hoo Now Undead
by Alex Woodie

The deal that was once all but dead is now showing signs of stirring back to life. According to a statement Monday from Microsoft, the company is willing to enter into negotiations to buy all or part of Yahoo, provided that activist investor Carl Icahn is successful in throwing out the existing Yahoo board and replacing it with his hand-picked slate in the board election next month. Microsoft Patches Security Flaws in Windows, SQL Server, and Exchange
by Alex Woodie

Microsoft published four patches for nine security vulnerabilities in Windows and other products yesterday during its monthly Patch Tuesday event. Nevertheless, newly disclosed flaws in Exchange Server and SQL Server could open the door to potentially harmful attacks from internal and external threats, and as such they should not be taken lightly. Hyper-V Goes RTM as VMware Hiccups
by Alex Woodie

Yesterday marked the official delivery of Microsoft Hyper-V, the much-anticipated hypervisor that carves an X64 server into multiple virtual servers or PCs running separate images of Windows Server, Windows client, or Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server operating systems. With broad backing from its huge partner program, Microsoft's chances of success with Hyper-V look promising, especially with the recent problems of its rival VMware. However, Hyper-V ships without some critical tooling to manage virtual machines. READ MORE >

Microsoft Unveils New 'Select Plus' Volume Licensing Program
by Alex Woodie

Microsoft last week unveiled a new volume licensing plan called Select Plus that it says will simplify licensing for customers with distributed operations. The new program carries most of the same obligations and license fees as existing volume programs, but will save customers money by giving them the maximum volume discounts for the company as a whole, and save them time through centralized purchasing. VMware Replaces Co-Founder Greene with Microsoft Hotshot
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Call it a sign of the times, or the inevitable result of Microsoft entering a market that someone else has controlled for a while.
