New beta release of Exchange Server 2007 and an antivirus package for Exchange Server 2007 were released by Microsoft this week. The second beta for Exchange Server 2007 was hailed by Microsoft as a milestone in the development of the new e-mail and collaboration server, which should become available later this year or in early 2007. Forefront Security for Exchange Server, a new release of Microsoft's Antigen, is expected to ship in the same timeframe.
The new beta release is "feature complete," and shouldn't differ much from the new version of Exchange Server, the company says. New features expected with this release include better tools for managing the e-mail store, the capability to search on a device, to perform a self-service "remote device wipe," to read HTML mail, to flag messages, and better document access and meeting request handling.
"Today we enter the home stretch," said Dave Thompson, corporate vice president of the Exchange business unit at Microsoft.
Meanwhile, Microsoft also released a new beta for Forefront Security for Exchange Server, which is based on the Antigen antivirus software the company acquired through its purchase of Sybari Software about a year-and-a-half ago. Forefront Security for Exchange Server will integrate directly into the Exchange product. Microsoft shipped versions of the software for other e-mail servers earlier this month (see "Microsoft to Ship Antigen E-Mail Security Software July 1").
