Just in advance of IBM's launch of its Notes/Domino 8 groupware software, Microsoft announced that it had made available to customers a technology preview of Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1, the updated version of Microsoft's email and groupware server that acts as the backend to its various Outlook clients.
By putting Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Beta 2 out into a technology preview, over 1 million subscribers to Microsoft Developer Network and the TechNet service can download the beta code for that SP1. With this update, Exchange Server will support the Windows Vista client operating system, launched in January, as well as the forthcoming Windows Server 2008, formerly known as Longhorn Server and the companion to Vista. Windows Server 2003 SP2 will also be able to support Exchange Server 2007 SP1 when it is announced. The key feature Microsoft is singling out for the Windows Server 2008 and Exchange Server 2007 SP1 combo is the ability to create geographically dispersed Exchange Server clusters. Exchange Server also has a standby continuous replication (SCR) feature, which does exactly what the name implies--replicates mailbox data to a standby server so a natural disaster doesn't take out emails.
The updated Exchange Server software will also be able to deliver faxes and voicemail to Outlook email boxes and through Office Communicator 2007. It will include the new Forefront Security server, which runs atop Windows Server 2008 and links into Exchange Server 2007 SP1 to provide improved content filtering in 11 different languages, better integration with Systems Center Operations Manager, and a better means of blocking highly compressed ZIP files that have malware in them.
Exchange Server 2007 SP1 and the Forefront Security for Exchange Server SP1 are expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2007.
