Key Pieces to Unified Communications Available in October

The launch date for several of the key pieces in Microsoft's unified communications software has been set for October 16. Included in this package of products that become available then are Office Communications Server 2007, Office Communicator 2007, and Office Live Meeting.
Unified communications, as defined by Microsoft, will drive the next major advancement in individual, team, and organizational productivity in today's 24x7, always-connected, and increasingly mobile work environment. These products combine e-mail, instant messaging, mobile, and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephony, and audio, video, and Web conferencing.
Office Communications Server 2007 and Office Communicator 2007, the server and client products that are the foundation of Voice over IP (VoIP) strategy were released to manufacturing three weeks ago.
The much-anticipated products will bring capabilities such as phone calls initiated from Office 2007 by clicking on a person's name, assigning a telephone call a subject, like with e-mail, and accessing e-mail from a telephone. The 2007 versions of Office and Exchange Server hooked up to OCS07 and Office Communicator 2007 will be required to make use of features such as call holding, forwarding, and transferring, and unifying voice mail and e-mail in a single inbox.
