Microsoft to Restrict Itanium Workloads in Longhorn

Windows Longhorn-era servers running 64-bit Itanium processors will only be permitted to run certain types of high-end workloads and will be prevented from being used for everyday file- and print-serving tasks, Microsoft revealed on its Web site last week. Citing the need to simplify administration tasks, Microsoft says Itanium-based servers will be optimized for three workloads under Longhorn, including database application, transaction-intensive business applications, and custom-developed apps. IBM, Gateway Launch New X64 Servers

Chip maker Intel is trying to close the gap in technology between its own X64 chips (Pentiums and Xeons) and alternative Althon and Opteron processors from AMD, and all the announcements at Intel Developer Forum don't amount to a hill of chips until server makers actually get X64 products out the door that compete against products that use AMD components. Tech Sector Chips In With Hurricane Relief

As the world watched the horror show that was New Orleans unfold in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina last week, high technology developers stepped up to help the victims. Microsoft, normally the subject of this newsletter, made a donation in the form of .NET programmers who quickly put together a Web site to help people locate their loved ones who have gone missing. DataMirror Updates XML Transformation Software

Five years ago, XML was seen as a cure-all for the escalation of disparate document formats and the new common language for conducting business online. While XML has become a key standard, it hasn't replaced other types of documents, such as EDI and flat files, which are still in widespread use.
