New Test Releases of Windows Server 2008, 'Viridian' Imminent

Microsoft is very close to delivering the first release candidate (RC) of Windows Server 2008 and the first community technology preview (CTP) of 'Viridian,' the hypervisor layer for Windows Server 2008 that will be called Windows Server Virtualization, the software giant said from the VMworld 2007 conference this week. In other virtual news, Microsoft shipped the first version of its Virtual Machine Manager, and announced deeper support by Citrix Systems, which is buying XenSource, for its Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format. AMD Gets Aggressive About Watts with Quad-Core Barcelonas

A balance of power was restored between X64 chip rivals Intel and Advanced Micro Devices as the latter company on Monday launched its quad-core 'Barcelona' Opteron processors at several events around the globe, including an event at the Lucas Theater on the Presidio campus in San Francisco. Lucasfilm, the company owned by George Lucas and which, among many other things, brought us the Star Wars and Indiana Jones blockbusters, is among the first companies with Barcelona in production--in this case, for digital rendering. Microsoft Ships BizTalk Server R2

Microsoft this week officially announced the general availability of BizTalk Server 2006 Release 2 (R2), a new release of its core enterprise application integration (EAI) offering. With this release, Microsoft has introduced 'native' support for business-to-business technologies such as EDI, AS2, and RFID, and also delivered a new low-cost version designed for installation in branch offices. Microsoft Patches Four Security Flaws

Microsoft yesterday issued four patches fixing four security flaws affecting several of its products, including two flaws affecting recent versions of Windows, and three that have been publicly disclosed. There was only a single critical flaw issued yesterday--for a remote code execution vulnerability affecting Windows 2000 SP4--and three other patches the company deemed 'important.' A fifth patch was in the works as recently as Friday, but the software giant elected against releasing it for its September Patch Tuesday. READ MORE >
