Virtual Server 2005 Takes Flight

NEC Delivers Four-Way Fault Tolerant Windows Server

NEC Solutions America, the U.S. unit of Japanese server maker NEC, has announced a new fault tolerant Windows server, a machine with the unwieldy name of the Express5800/340 Hb-R. The machine was announced in Japan a few months ago and is now being sold in the States, where NEC is trying to expand its share of the server market. READ MORE >

IBM, Intel Open Up BladeCenter with Royalty-Free Specs

No one knows better than IBM the dangers of opening up the specifications of a hardware technology. In 1981, in an effort to create a vibrant ecosystem with its legendary PC AT personal computer, IBM completely opened up the specs, allowing not only anyone to create hardware and software that plugged into the PC AT, but also eventually allowing Compaq and others to create full-blown clones of it. This undercut IBM's PC sales, and it lost control of the PC platform it created. Forrester Says IT Budgets Will Be Up 7% in 2005
