Bang for the Buck: Windows Fights Two Front War with Unix and Linux

You have to hand it to Microsoft. The company took a desktop operating system monopoly and turned it into a server platform with a massive marketing machine that can fight a two-front war in the data center. On one front, Windows and the enterprise editions of various Microsoft systems software takes on Unix, which is entrenched and trusted in the data center. And at the other end, cut-down Windows stacks compete head-to-head with Linux stacks, which are becoming trusted. READ MORE >

Dell and Symantec Team for 'Secure Exchange' Solution

Symantec and Dell have teamed up to provide Windows shops with an integrated bundle of hardware, software, and services designed to take the pain out of deploying Microsoft Exchange in a secure and reliable way. The bundle, called Secure Exchange, includes Dell servers, storage, and technical services plus security and backup software from Symantec, and starts at about $55,000 for a 500-seat deployment, the companies announced this week. Microsoft Ramping Up the Vista Propaganda Engine

Earlier this year, Microsoft proclaimed that the launch of Windows Vista will be the biggest launch event since Windows 95. Those were tall words for a company skilled in the art of hype, but if recent moves --including the pronouncement from Windows guru Jim Allchin that Vista apps will be "mind-bogglingly cool" and a new whitepaper from IDC that Vista will drive $40 billion in economic activity in Europe--are any indication, the Vista marketing train has left the station. HP Completes Montecito Itanium Rollout into Integrity Servers

Server maker Hewlett-Packard recently completed the revamping of its Itanium-based Integrity server line with the rollout of new machines that employ a home-grown chipset and Intel's "Montecito" dual-core Itanium 9000 processors. The Montecito chips were announced in mid-July, and bring the Itanium processor line to more or less performance parity with other RISC chips, thanks in large part to the move to a dual-core architecture.
