Microsoft Reorganizes Ahead of Allchin's Retirement in 2006

Microsoft said this week that it has yet again reorganized itself as it seeks to heal around the departure of another of its top executives and to configure itself to better pursue business opportunities in the IT sector. How much of the reorganization is due to the retirement in 2006 of Jim Allchin, who was vice president of the Platforms Group at Microsoft until this week's reorg, and how much of the chair shuffling is due to an opportunity presented by Allchin's departure, is unclear. Microsoft Refines Software Assurance for 2006

Microsoft's Software Assurance customers will gain access to a slew of new training and professional services, including 24x7 phone support and extended hotfix support, as part of changes to the customer support program that Microsoft unveiled last week. However, when the new iteration of Software Assurance becomes available next March, only customers who sign Software Assurance contracts will be able to use new specific versions of Windows Vista and Windows XP, which may boost Microsoft's revenues, but could also alienate customers. Softricity Streamlines Access to Desktop Apps with ZeroTouch

Softricity this week unveiled new virtualization software aimed at making it easier to access their software from user desktops. The new software, called ZeroTouch, employs a combination of Softricity's SoftGrid desktop virtualization software, as well as a new screen scraping technique for enabling customers to access desktop applications from a server over low-bandwidth connections. Egenera Gets $300 Million Reseller Deal with Fujitsu-Siemens

Blade server maker Egenera announced yesterday that it has negotiated a $300 million reseller agreement with Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the European arm of the Fujitsu and Siemens information technology partnership. The deal spans 30 months so it can complete FSC's next fiscal year (ended in March 2006) and then adds two years to it. READ MORE >
