Microsoft Aims to Streamline Web Experience with "Live" Offerings

People are spending more time online, but many are frustrated with the fragmented nature of their Internet experience, Microsoft says. Microsoft executives unveiled a pair of solutions to that problem yesterday in San Francisco, including Windows Live, a new platform designed to be the center of a user's Internet experience, and Office Live, a similar offering targeted at small business users. Microsoft Revenues Grow 6 Percent, Profit Soars to $3.1 Billion

Led by a double-digit increase in its Windows Server and development tools business and stronger than expected back-to-school sales, Microsoft last week posted solid revenue growth and profit for the first quarter of its 2006 fiscal year, which ended September 30. Total revenue for the software giant rose 6 percent to $9.74 billion, while net income increased 24 percent to $3.14 billion. New ERP and CRM software sales were also up more than 20 percent, beating the overall enterprise software market. READ MORE >

SQL Server 2005 Released to Manufacturing

SQL Server 2005, the new database management system that was first slated for availability three years ago, was released to manufacturing by Microsoft last week, the final step before it becomes generally available to customers. The launch of the new database, codenamed "Yukon," is an important milestone for Microsoft, which is why the company will be pulling out the stops at a gala launch event in San Francisco next Monday. There has been a lot of talk lately about virtualizing hardware and running multiple operating system images on the same machine to make it easier to manage applications. Informatica is now applying that general idea to data transformations with a new version of its flagship PowerCenter product unveiled this week.
