Visual Studio 2008 to Ship By End of November

Windows developers received post-Halloween treats this week when Microsoft announced that the next releases of Visual Studio and the .NET Framework will be available by the end of the month. Microsoft also announced a community technology preview (CTP) of Microsoft Sync Framework, which the company boasts will enable any applications to share data over any protocol, and the opening up of Visual Studio to support non-Windows platforms. Intel Quietly Releases 'Montvale' Itanium Kickers

It is hard to say why, but the launch of the 'Montvale' Itanium 9100 kickers to the current dual-core 'Montecito' Itanium 9000 processors could go down as the least enthusiastic launch that Intel has ever done for a microprocessor. I mean, Montvale did not even, according to Intel's PR department, rate its own set of foils, even though it can boost performance for customers by as much as 19 percent compared to the Montecito chips. Microsoft this week introduced a new product called Search Server 2008 Express that will give users free access to the level of search capabilities normally found in higher-end search products. The company also announced distribution changes for SharePoint Services, a Windows Server technology that plays a key role in Microsoft's search strategy, raising some questions about what moves Microsoft might make next as it battles Google and Yahoo! for search market share.
