Flaws in Windows operating systems continue to provide a broad attackable surface for hackers and malicious code like viruses and worms to do their dirty work, but vulnerabilities in applications, including databases, antivirus, and backup software, and network devices increasingly are being exploited, according to SANS Institute, which released its annual Top 20 list of Internet security vulnerabilities last week. You can crab all you want about vendor-sponsored research, such as the many studies that Microsoft has sponsored directly or endorsed as it tries to fight off the onslaught of Linux, but it does one very practical thing. Microsoft Improves Mobile Device Support in Hosted E-Mail Solution

System administrators and people who download and read their e-mail on cell phones and PDAs are the big winners with the new release of Microsoft's hosted e-mail service announced Monday. With Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration version 3.5, the company includes a new "direct push" synchronization capability, as well as a "remote wipe" for erasing data on lost mobile devices. Microsoft also announced a new partner program for all of its hosted solutions. READ MORE >

HP's Q4 Sales Grow, Profits Hit by Restructuring

Hewlett-Packard reported its fourth quarter and year-end fiscal 2005 financial results after we went to press in the last issue, and the numbers were more or less in line with the expectation that the company would see decent revenue growth, but would see its bottom line in the quarter impacted by restructurings announced earlier in the year. HP pushed $22.9 billion in various wares and services in the quarter, up 7 percent year-over-year, but net earnings were down 62 percent to $416 million due to nearly $1.6 billion in restructuring charges.
