Micro Focus Joins with Partners to Modernize Legacy Apps

Micro Focus, the British provider of software development tools that is probably best known for its COBOL compilers, last week announced that it has formed a consortium of tool providers who want to help migrate and transform legacy applications running on minicomputers and mainframes.

Dubbed the Migration and Transformation Consortium, this organization is an amalgam of providers of various programming languages and database management systems running on legacy systems and companies who provide transformation tools to get these applications to the Web. Specifically, it includes 50 companies with expertise in:

• Legacy mainframe and midrange systems, including ancient gear such as Siemens BS2000, Bull GCOS, DEC VAX, Data General DG, HP HP3000, ICL VME, Tandem, Unisys A series, Unisys 2200, and, believe it or not, Wang machines
• 3GL and 4GL compilers, including ADSO, Application Master, Assembler, COBOL, CoolGEN, CSP, EAE, Easytrieve, IDEAL, MANTIS, PACBASE, RPG, TELON and TPF
• Datacom, DMS, DMSII, IDMS, IDS2, INFOS, Model 204, PACE and Supra

The idea behind the consortium is to bring more expertise to bear, since most tool providers have expertise in one or two platforms. The MTC also does something else: It keeps Micro Focus in the center of all of the legacy application modernization that is going on in the market, even though its main focus is on moving COBOL off old mainframes and sometimes AS/400s.
