  • Former ProData Employee Resurrects Damon Technologies

    January 11, 2011 Alex Woodie

After six years with ProData, Schadd Gray has split from the IBM i tools vendor to restart his previous company, Damon Technologies, where he will develop and sell RPG Server Pages (RSP).

Gray teamed up with Omaha, Nebraska-based ProData in 2004 in large part to get a bigger distribution channel for RSP, a product Gray had created for Web-enabling RPG programs.

RSP was touted as a superior method of developing Web applications on the IBM i platform. Instead of writing Web interface code separately from the back-end RPG logic, RSP co-mingles the RPG with client-side HTML and JavaScript, giving developers quicker feedback on what works. RSP includes a code editor, about 20 or so RSP functions, and an RSP runtime component.

Sometime in 2010, Gray decided to leave ProData, and go back to selling RSP through Damon Tech, which is also based in Omaha. “It was a good experience,” Gray says via e-mail of his time at ProData. “However, I felt it was time for me to control my own destiny once more. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit.”

Gray is currently developing a new version of RSP that he believes his customers “will truly enjoy using.”

In addition to RSP, Gray regains control of Stored Procedure Test Environment (STE), a tool that streamlines the stored procedure testing cycle by allowing developers to invoke stored procedures from a 5250 interface. STE will become an open source product, he says.

Gray has a few other software projects going, including a couple of product ideas for the IBM i community, and consumer applications for the smart phone market. “This is a new direction for us, but one I believe will have a strong future,” he says.
