  • Reader Feedback On: Big Blue Pulls The Plug And As I See It: Overrated

February 27, 2012 Timothy Prickett Morgan

On Big Blue Pulls The Plug On IBM i Discount Deal:

    Mr. Tim:

The withdrawal of the 40 percent off user pricing for IBM i was not a big deal. The original 311-171 announcement clearly said that the intention was to encourage customers to move from older machines, not targeted at net new. They had already announced the ability of installed user based machines to move all their users along with an IBM i license for $5,000. Solution Edition machines provide 70 percent off user pricing (as you pointed out). Remember that you can write your own apps and still buy a Solution Edition. There are Solution Editions for several products like replication (Vision Solutions), automation (Help/Systems), etc.

The group that gets hurt is comprised of customers on older Enterprise Edition machines that don’t qualify for a Solution Edition. And although there are still a significant number of those customers still out there, you have to wonder how many will buy new as opposed to used machines.

You have a valid point that it would be nice to provide promo pricing for everyone, like the old Move Up to i promo that capped unlimited users at $28,000 for migration customers. But that one expired. They will fill the hole with something.

On As I See It: Overrated:

Somewhat hypocritical of the “elites” to make millions off the blithering masses and then eschew them for themselves. I think the “weapons of mass dementia” applies equally to adults because most people use them as nothing but toys and worse think it makes them sophisticated.

What is once a good idea turns into purely boorish behavior on the part of the masses who seem to neither care nor understand the results of their actions. Although it doesn’t surprise me the list of companies cited–who in my opinion have done little to further technological knowledge–are instead users themselves and are becoming successful off the creations and innovations of others decades before them.

Of course this makes their comments all the more surrealistic.
