HTML5 Emulation Client Now GA from Cybele

Cybele Software last week announced the general availability (GA) of z/Scope Anywhere 7.0, a new version of its terminal emulator for accessing IBM i, zSeries, and Unix hosts from Web browsers. Version 7.0 boasts a complete rewrite in HTML5 and JavaScript, which will deliver consistent experiences across the myriad PCs, smartphones, and tablets that are in use today. HTML5 is the first new version of Hypertext Markup Language since HTML4 debuted way back in 1999. Obviously, a lot has changed since then, most notably the use of rich media and graphic capabilities in websites, and the rapid proliferation of handheld devices, like tablets and smartphones. With HTML5, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has changed the underlying syntax of the language to simplify it, and to be able to do things within HTML itself that previously required AJAX skills, including JavaScript and XML, or proprietary plugins and APIs, which are often not available or poorly implemented on low-powered devices like smartphones and tablets. The lack of Flash support on Apple iOS devices is the most clear example of this. The adoption of HTML5 is still in the roll-out phase, and not all Web browsers are 100 percent compliant with the new standard. Nevertheless, the path forward for Web developers is clear, and HTML5 is widely heralded as the best way to deliver a rich Web experience without the need for finicky plug-ins or separate development efforts for different devices. Cybele rolled out a beta of z/Scope version 7 in early summer and is now ready to put the app into production. The software supports TN3270E, TN5250E, VT100, VT220, VT320, and VT420 emulation protocols on Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, and Opera Web browsers running on practically any desktop or mobile OS, including Windows, Linux OS X, iOS, and Android. As expected, the Wilmington, Delaware, company has added several additional features to the product since the beta was released, including an FTP client, history logs, and printing support. The software, which features a touchscreen-supported user interface based on Microsoft‘s heralded Metro UI design, supports the capability to run multiple emulation sessions simultaneously. The software uses 128-bit SSL 2.0 and 3.0 encryption over the HTTPS protocol, providing a standard path through corporate firewalls.
