IBM: CMOD for i ‘Alive and Well’

In last week’s The Four Hundred, we ran a story titled “Content Manager OnDemand For i Withdrawn In 2016.” It turns out that the product is very much alive. “It is alive and well,” Tim Rowe, the business architect for application development and systems management for IBM i at the IBM lab in Rochester, Minnesota, told us. For a while, it seemed clear enough that CMOD for i was dead. According to IBM U.S. Withdrawal Announcement 914-242 dated November 11, all of the CMOD for i products that IBM sells under the product ID number 5770-RD1 were going to be pulled from marketing starting February 11, 2015, and pulled from support a year later. We even had a screenshot of the announcement letter showing the entire CMOD for i product being withdrawn, with no replacement program planned. It turns out, that was all a big mistake. The only products that IBM was withdrawing were the CMOD for Multiplatforms version 8.5 product and the AFP2Web extensions for all CMOD products, including those on IBM i and the Multiplatforms product. But because of the way it was presented in IBM’s announcement letter, it appeared that IBM was withdrawing the entire CMOD for i product. “We were equally shocked as everybody else,” Rowe says. A second aspect of our story–about the CMOD for Multiplatform product being the recommended replacement for CMOD for i–was also wrong. An IBM product manager for CMOD contacted us to let us know that the information IT Jungle obtained from an IBM representative via the IBM website was wrong. “The person who provided that information is misinformed,” he said.
