  • SunGard Unveils Restoration Services Offering

    January 22, 2008 Alex Woodie

SunGard last week launched a new service offering designed to help companies recover their servers in the event of a disaster. With its new offering, called Restoration Services for Managed IT Services, SunGard will help companies design and test their disaster recovery plans, and then provide them with facilities, equipment, and expertise in the event that any of the companies declare a disaster.

For years, SunGard Availability Services has been helping some of the nation’s largest companies ensure their capability to maintain IT and business services in the event of a disaster. In recent months, the Wayne, Pennsylvania, company has been redefining and refining its various offerings, and the launch of Restoration Services is part of that process.

The starting point for SunGard’s Restoration Services offering is the Managed Technology Plan, a role-based contingency policy that outlines the most important details of a DR plan, including technical dependencies, functional responsibilities, and processes that must be followed during tests and actual disasters.

In the event of an actual disaster declaration, SunGard will lend its IT infrastructure, including its servers, network, power systems, and end-user facilities, to the affected company. SunGard maintains dedicated sites around the country, and also maintains a fleet of mobile data centers that can be deployed to disaster zones.

Testing is a critical component of any DR plan, and Restoration Services respects this requirement by including set hours that customers have access to SunGard experts and facilities to test their procedure.

The new Restoration Services offering demonstrates SunGard’s commitment to availability, says Frank Lacomba, director of product management for SunGard Availability Services. In fact, SunGard has been so successful that it maintains a 100 percent recovery rate in addressing customer outages, he says.

Restoration Services supports all platforms, including the System i server, as long as Windows or Linux is part of the equation, a SunGard spokesperson said. For more information, visit www.availability.sungard.com.
