  • Gumbo Delivers New Goodies in Dumpster

    January 25, 2011 Alex Woodie

Gumbo Software recently unveiled a new release of Dumpster, a free utility that helps programmers understand the inner workings of IBM i spool files so that they can track down errors, tweak program behavior, or boost the throughput of print jobs. With Dumpster V1R7, Gumbo has delivered support for IBM i 7.1, among other new features.

By generating formatted “dumps” of IBM i spool files, Gumbo’s Dumpster enables users to dissect and parse spooled files, and thereby gain a better understanding of exactly what’s going on in there. The software inputs most print data streams, including SCS, IPDS, and AFPDS, and outputs several dumps, including the raw data stream in a readable format, the file’s complete attributes, a list of external resource references, and information on the file’s buffer.

Gumbo has made a number of enhancements and fixes with Dumpster V1R7. For starters, the tool can now locate user-supplied fonts. Previously, only IBM-supplied fonts could be found by the tool. Also, Gumbo has added the capability to process certain fonts used in IBM‘s InfoPrint Designer output management product.

Fixes have been rendered for problems the tool encountered dealing with AFPDS and double byte character set (DBCS) fonts. Gumbo added functions to open and close font file paths coded in any CCSID. Dumpster V1R7 has also been changed to support new behavior of an AFPDS API with IBM i 7.1.

Dumpster is freeware, but users are bound by Gumbo’s license agreement. For more information and downloads, see www.gumbo.com.
