  • Halcyon Snaps Up Snapshot

    May 25, 2010 Alex Woodie

Halcyon Software made a bold move yesterday with the announced acquisition of Snapshot, a performance management tool for the System i servers. Halcyon entered into the deal for Snapshot with Mid-Comp International, the Australian software company that previously owned the product.

Snapshot Total System Control (TSC) is a client-server application that collects performance data via agents deployed on the System i server, and displays the information on a Windows-based console, where administrators can view colorful graphics depicting the state of their monitored systems as well as perform “what if” capacity planning. The software also sends alerts to mobile phones or e-mail when it detects potential performance problems.

It has been five years since IT Jungle has heard of any new developments with Snapshot, which was developed by Mid-Comp and sold through distributors and resellers to System i shops around the world. In recent years, Mid-Comp appeared to be more heavily focusing on Odyssey, it’s Java-based suite of ERP applications.

Halcyon, a U.K. software firm that has been moving aggressively into the U.S. market in recent years, was more than happy to acquire the rights to Snapshot, and sell it along with its array of i/OS systems management tools.

“We are delighted to add the Snapshot products to our extensive portfolio supporting IBM i offerings,” stated Halcyon Software CEO, Lorraine Cousins, in a press release. “We are pledging our assurances to all existing Snapshot customers that we will continue to provide technical support for the Snapshot products and customers will not experience any increase in their fees for this service. As a Halcyon customer, you have the reassurance that our solutions are compatible with the latest hardware technology from IBM.”

Adding a dedicated performance management tool to its suite of i/OS systems management tools seems to make sense for Halcyon, which is targeting outsourcers, data center bureaus, and other companies that run System i hardware for their clients. Sizing servers for a particular workload is as much art as science, and a tool like Snapshot can help to shed more light on the practice.

Dennis Vaughan, formerly of Mid-Comp, said he is pleased that Halcyon now owns Snapshot. “They have an excellent reputation in the market for supporting the IBM i platform and I look forward to working with them to ensure a smooth transition,” he stated.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Get More Out of Your IBM i

With soaring costs, operational data is more critical than ever. IBM shops need faster, easier ways to distribute IBM applications-based data to users more efficiently, no matter where they are.

    The Problem:

For Users, IBM Data Can Be Difficult to Get To

IBM Applications generate reports as spooled files, originally designed to be printed. Often those reports are packed together with so much data it makes them difficult to read. Add to that hardcopy is a pain to distribute. User-friendly formats like Excel and PDF are better, offering sorting, searching, and easy portability but getting IBM reports into these formats can be tricky without the right tools.

    The Solution:

IBM i Reports can easily be converted to easy to read and share formats like Excel and PDF and Delivered by Email

Converting IBM i, iSeries, and AS400 reports into Excel and PDF is now a lot easier with SpoolFlex software by DRV Tech.  If you or your users are still doing this manually, think how much time is wasted dragging and reformatting to make a report readable. How much time would be saved if they were automatically formatted correctly and delivered to one or multiple recipients.

SpoolFlex converts spooled files to Excel and PDF, automatically emailing them, and saving copies to network shared folders. SpoolFlex converts complex reports to Excel, removing unwanted headers, splitting large reports out for individual recipients, and delivering to users whether they are at the office or working from home.

Watch our 2-minute video and see DRV’s powerful SpoolFlex software can solve your file conversion challenges.
