  • Seagull to Support RPG Open Access with LegaSuite 6

    June 29, 2010 Alex Woodie

Seagull Software plans to support IBM‘s new Rational Open Access: RPG Edition technology with the late summer launch of LegaSuite 6, a spokesperson for the company’s owner, Rocket Software, said recently.

RPG Open Access is a potentially revolutionary new technology in i/OS that enables RPG developers to bypass the legacy 5250 data stream and to generate client programs that communicate with System i applications using XML-based methods. The software, which has been heralded by many System i experts and industry pundits, will likely pave the way for a new generation of interfaces for System i products–including rich GUIs and more intelligence application-level integration.

While Seagull wasn’t one of the original i/OS modernization tool vendors to sign on in support of IBM’s new RPG Open Access technology when its existence was divulged with i/OS 7.1 earlier this year, the Atlanta, Georgia, outfit soon took a liking to what it saw, and joined IBM’s efforts. IBM needs ISVs to support the new technology because developing RPG Open Access I/O “handlers” is too complex and expensive for most end user organizations to tackle by themselves.

Seagull product manager Greg Mummah shared his company’s four-step plans for RPG Open Access, and we covered those plans in a story last month.

Then, earlier this month, Seagull formally announced its plans for supporting RPG Open Access, and IT Jungle learned that the new features will be added to LegaSuite version 6, which is currently slated for availability in September.

Sam Elias, the worldwide business area executive for Seagull products at Rocket Software, shared his thoughts on RPG Open Access in a press release issued two weeks ago.

“We have a significant installed base of customers who rely on the IBM i platform, so enhancing our LegaSuite products to support Open Access: RPG Edition is key to helping organizations offer new, high-performance SaaS [software as a service] and cloud capabilities while preserving their investment in the IBM i,” he says. “We are excited about IBM’s Open Access: RPG Edition offering because it brings RPG into the future.”
