  • SafeData Delivers Backup Appliance for System i and Windows

    October 27, 2009 Alex Woodie

SafeData yesterday unveiled SafeData Vault, a new appliance designed to back up and restore data to and from System i and Windows servers. In addition to storing the backups locally, the new device sends backups across the Internet to SafeData’s data center, providing customers with an off-site backup that can be used in the event of a disaster.

SafeData is no stranger to disaster recovery and high availability services. The Warwick, Rhode Island, company began courting iSeries shops with hosted DR in 2005, when its principal, Peter Briggs, established SafeData after serving for a time as a Lakeview Technology business partner. Since then, the company has branched out into high availability services, including fully managed HA for the System i, which the company launched last year.

Anything involving managed services or hosting applications is hot right now. Another area of IT that’s on fire is appliance computing. Customers like the thought of buying a pre-configured device and dropping it into their network, without worrying about provisioning and configuring a new server.

Now, with the launch of SafeData Vault, SafeData is delivering the best of both worlds, according to Briggs.

“Recovering data over the Internet can take time,” Briggs says in a press release. “With SafeData Vault, customers can recover data locally if a file is lost or a computer has been affected by a virus. However, if a disaster occurs, such as a flood, hurricane or major system failure, the off-site backup provides insurance that their data is protected and recoverable.”

SafeData says its new data vault appliance is a complement to its hosted DR services. For a single monthly subscription fee, customers can get the SafeData Vault to store backups locally, and pay no additional fee for the right to have SafeData manage their System i and Windows backups as part of its SafeData/DR offering.

Technical details and pricing information for the SafeData Vault were not available as this issue of the newsletter went to press. For more information visit the vendor’s Web site at www.safedata.net.
