    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

Infor Has High Hopes for New S&OP Application

Infor last week launched a new Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) application designed to improve the profitability of manufacturers, distributors, and companies in other industries by serving as a clearinghouse of supply chain-related data, and fostering better collaboration among decision makers in a supply chain. The software giant plans to sell the software, which has a Windows-based OLAP underpinning, into its existing customer base, including companies that use BPCS, MAPICS, System 21, and Baan, as well as competing ERP and SCM packages.

Infor S&OP is an entirely new application designed to help

  • At mindSHIFT, IBM i Hosting Options Abound

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

There is a widely held view in the IBM i community that IBM‘s Power Systems server is without a doubt the best platform in the world for running a “cloud” computing operation. However, there seems to be few vendors actually doing this. One managed service provider (MSP) that’s made the IBM i server a central component of its cloud operations is mindSHIFT Technologies, which upgraded its IBM i hosting options last year.

mindSHIFT Technologies is one of the largest MSPs in the country. It multiple divisions specialize in specific hosting tasks, such as running e-mail systems, hosting websites,

  • nuBridges Unveils TaaS, a Hosted Data Tokenization Service

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

nuBridges last week unveiled a new hosted version of its software that uses tokenization to protect sensitive data. The new offering, which is called nuBridges Protect Tokenization as a Service (TaaS), is being delivered with nuBridges’ new business partner, Verizon Business. Customers who subscribe to the new service will get the benefit of tokenization for IBM i and other servers, but none of the burden of managing the tokenization environment.

nuBridges Protect TaaS is a basically hosted version of the company’s nuBridges Protect Token Manager that runs on Verizon Business’ computing as a service (CaaS) offering. Under TaaS, customers

  • Qualys Launches Open Source Web App Firewall Project

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

Qualys last week unveiled IronBee, a new open source Web application firewall (WAF) project. The goal of the project is to leverage the open source community to build a high performance WAF that can protect users against the latest security threats to Web applications. The software will feature a liberal license, and will be free to anybody.

Security on the Web continues to be a giant concern for everybody who does business on the public Internet. And while many organizations are vaguely aware there’s some kind of problem going on out there, there is far too little actively being done

  • IBM Delivers Super Fast IPS

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

IBM last week unveiled a new security appliance designed to thwart attempts to compromise networks, computers, and applications. Called the Security Network Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) GX7800, the key differentiator of the device is its purported capability to isolate threats at network speeds up to 20 gigabits per second, which IBM claims is almost twice as fast as competing IPSes.

The GX7800 is an all-purpose security device designed to protect customers from a variety of known attack methods, including SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), denial of service, and drive-by downloads, as well as blended attacks and those that use obfuscation.

  • Attunity Signs OEM Deal with Microsoft for SSIS

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

Attunity has another OEM deal with Microsoft to supply data connectivity software for the next version of SQL Server. This second OEM deal involves Attunity’s ODBC connector, which will be used to supply SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and cloud applications with data from virtually any data source.

Burlington, Massachusetts-based Attunity has been lauded by IBM i shops for its real-time data integration software, and particularly the speed at which its log-based, change data capture (CDC) technology can detect and replicate changes as they occur in DB2/400. The software often augments extract, transform, and load (ETL) tools for the purpose

  • LogRhythm Goes AI with Security Threat Detection Engine

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

LogRhythm this month unveiled a new security threat detection engine for its security information and event management (SIEM) software. With its advanced pattern-matching capabilities, LogRhythm says its new Advanced Intelligence (AI) engine will help users identify complex and blended security attack methods faster than before.

Like most SIEM systems, the LogRhythm product does double-duty. On the one hand, it tracks application and server logs for compliance purposes. And as a SIEM product, it gathers and correlates information about events that may pose a security risk.

The Boulder, Colorado, company says its new AI Engine goes beyond simple correlation to provide

  • QlikView Looks Inside the Criminal Mind

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

People were understandably impressed with the display of knowledge that IBM‘s Watson put on during last week’s Jeopardy! TV show. But compared to the real-life work that QlikTech is doing with its technology–namely, helping Swedish police to track down and convict a serial shooter–Watson appears an expensive demonstration of fun and games.

Last week, QlikTech announced that Swedish investigators have been using its in-memory reporting tool, called QlikView, to gain a deeper understanding of the circumstances surrounding a string of 15 public shootings in the city of Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city. Somebody had been shooting immigrants as they stood

  • IBM Updates LTO Storage Gear

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

IBM last week made several storage announcements involving LTO tape technology, including the launch of a new TS2900 tape autoloader, and enhancements to its existing TS3100 and TS3200 autoloaders.

The TS3100 and TS3200 are midrange LTO tape libraries designed to provide small and mid-size environments with hundreds of TB of unattended backup capacity. The libraries can be outfitted with a range of LTO drives that connect via SAS, Fibre Channel, or SCSI (although SCSI ceased to be a connection option with the latest LTO Gen 5 drives).

Last week IBM added support for several new half-height LTO drives with the

  • Lawson Unveils Cloud-Based PLM for Clothes Makers

    February 22, 2011 Alex Woodie

Clothes manufacturers and distributors who use the M3 suite from Lawson Software have a new cloud-based option when it comes to augmenting their ERP system with product lifecycle management (PLM) capabilities, the Minnesota software company announced last week.

The new offering, called Lawson Fashion PLM on the Cloud, sounds like a light and airy place where beautiful fashionistas float about in the ether. But in reality, the new offering is designed to give companies in the cut-throat clothing and shoe businesses a competitive edge when it comes to managing and organizing all the work that goes into rolling out new
