  • QJRN/400 Sniffs Out Fraud, One Journal Receiver at a Time

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

QJRN/400 from Cilasoft is a database auditing tool for the IBM System i server that relies on the operating system’s extensive journaling function to dig up evidence of malfeasance or fraud by users. Clever System i users will be able to hide their tracks to some extent. But when every little action is tracked and recorded, it’s just a matter of piecing the puzzle together, and that’s where QJRN/400 excels.

Cilasoft was founded 10 years ago in southern France by Guy (pronounced “Gee”) Marmorat, the company’s CEO and technical manager, and the head developer of QJRN/400. At the time, many

  • Databorough Beefs Up X-Analysis for Application Modernization

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

Databorough is in the process of rolling out X-Analysis version 8, a major new release that has been overhauled to provide a range of modernization services for RPG and COBOL applications. With new features such as Java and UML generation, migration to SQL-based databases, and low-level documentation of business processes, X-Analysis version 8 will give IBM i OS shops powerful new options for modernizing or migrating their applications to Java, EGL, or other languages, the vendor says.

From its headquarters in England, Databorough and its X-Analysis suite historically have been focused on providing cross-referencing and documentation capabilities for users of

  • BCD’s Presto Web Enablement Software Goes GA

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

Business Computer Design Int’l. last week announced the general availability of Presto, its new application modernization and Web enablement tool for applications running on IBM Power Systems servers. Presto instantly converts 5250 screens to Web interfaces, without requiring any invasive code changes, access to source code, or OLTP (interface) processing capability, BCD claims.

According to BCD, Presto allows organizations to create Web browser-based interfaces for their RPG or COBOL applications–including menu screens–in less than a day. This bit of magic is accomplished by pairing a conversion tool that generates HTML from the DDS code of i OS applications with the

  • IBM Promotes the i–iPhone, That Is

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

IBM became the latest high-tech company to jump on the iPhone bandwagon last week when it announced new software, called iNotes ultralite, for accessing Lotus Notes and Domino software from the ever-present Apple handheld device. While the iNotes ultralite software has been received well among businesses, IBM continues to ignore its own business-centric computing platform, the IBM i.

iNotes, of course, is not a new product for IBM. The technology behemoth has been selling a version of Notes that works in a Web browser under the iNotes brand since at least 2001, a search of the IT Jungle archives will

  • Valid Gets IBM Certification for i OS-Based Biometric System

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

Valid Technologies last month announced that it has received certification from IBM for using its i OS-based biometric authentication system with two Tivoli identity- and access-control products. The certification will allow organizations to ditch the use of passwords and tokens for authenticating log-ins for Web applications, and instead rely on peoples’ fingerprints to serve as the keys for entry.

Valid Secure Systems Authentication, or VSSA, is an i OS application that stores data about people’s fingerprints (not the fingerprints themselves) and provides the hooks into third-party authentication mechanisms. It has received the “Ready for IBM Tivoli” validation for Tivoli Identity

  • InfoPrint Goes for Printer Efficiency with ‘Productivity Tracker’

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

InfoPrint Solutions Company, the joint venture between IBM and Ricoh, last week launched a new release of the Productivity Tracker, a piece of software designed to optimize print operations, maximize printer utilization, and minimize labor costs for commercial printers.

Companies with large production printing operations have invested a lot of money into their printers, and cannot afford to let them stand idle for too long. Thanks to Productivity Tracker, they can collect relevant production data from compatible printers (InfoPrint 4000, 4100, and 5000 series) into a DB2 database, and then run queries against the data.
