  • SMBs Cautious About Tech Spending in ’09

    Surprise, surprise: Small and mid size businesses (SMBs) are pulling back on IT spending plans in reaction to the economic crises. This, according to a new survey from Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

    CompTIA conducted an online survey in September in which it asked 772 SMBs (companies with between 10 and 999 employees) in the United States, Canada, and England about their spending plans for technology and overall expansion in the next 12 months.

    The results showed a nearly even split: 51 percent of respondents said they planned to increase spending on IT, while 49 percent said their IT spending

  • RFID Spending to Grow 15 Percent Per Year, ABI Research Says

    A study released last week by ABI Research predicts that spending on radio frequency identification (RFID) products will grow at an average rate of 15 percent over the next five years, becoming nearly a $10 billion industry by 2013. However, that number could drop as a result of the global economic crisis.

    ABI Research is a company based in New York, London, and Singapore that conducts studies and publishes forecasts of interest to manufacturers in the automotive, consumer electronics, wireless, and broadband industries.   • Seagull Unveils New LegaSuite Reporting Tool

    System i integration experts Seagull Software last month unveiled a new reporting tool that enables organizations to develop reports and dashboards based on data held in a variety of back-end systems. The new tool is called LegaSuite Reporting, and Seagull says it features a code-less development studio based on Eclipse.

  • ProData Expands Database Support in DBU

    ProData Computer Services expanded the number of databases its SQL-based power tools can work with yesterday when it announced support for JDBC drivers with its DBU Remote Database (RDB) offering. ProData already supported most major databases–including DB2/400 of course–with its DBU RDB tool, but with the new release, customers gain access to additional databases such as IBM‘s Informix and Sybase ASE Server through those vendors’ standard JDBC drivers.

    DBU RDB was launched by ProData about 18 months ago to expand the number and types of databases that users of its flagship Database Utility (DBU) power tool can work with.

  • Micro Focus Works on COBOL Standardization, Training

    The European division of surfboard, wetsuit, and clothing manufacturer O’Neill is implementing Lawson Software‘s M3 suite of ERP applications on the IBM System i server. The roll-out of M3 Fashion is aimed at synchronizing the manufacturer’s supply chain operations, the software company announced last week.

  • XAware Plugs Integration Tooling Into Latest Eclipse Release

    Developers can now utilize the application integration capabilities of the open source XAware product from the comfort of their Eclipse version 3.4 development environment, the company announced last week.

    XAware is a Java-based data integration tool suite that allows users to create reusable logic to move data among disparate systems, including the System i, which has been certified as a target and a source for data transformations for the last two years.
