  • Weather Report: Enterprise Email Partly Cloudy By 2020

September 26, 2011 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Companies are as addicted to their email as their end users are. But corporations are going to give serious consideration to moving their email out there on the cloud.

That is the word from on high from Gartner, who says that cloud-based email only makes up about 3 or 4 percent of the market (presumably counting seats) at enterprises with more than 5,000 seats, the company expects cloud email to be 20 percent of the market as 2016 comes to a close and 55 percent by the end of 2020. It is worth noting that Google currently has about

  • Modern RPG, App Dev, and DB Topics Popular at Omni Conference

    September 26, 2011 Dan Burger

Just a couple weeks ago, the Omni User group, based in Chicago, presented its annual one-day technical conference. So I checked in with Jerome Hughes, an Omni User board member, for a quick review of how things went.

From an attendee standpoint, speakers and topics are what put people in the seats and in Hughes’ judgment there were several top speakers. This included Scott Klement, one of the best-known and best-liked presenters on RPG topics. “There are always a lot of meat and potatoes RPGers attending our conferences and they pick up a lot of information from Scott,” Hughes says.

  • Not All Telecommuters Are Getting The Job Done

    September 26, 2011 Jenny Thomas

I must be doing something wrong. I have been working from home for eight-plus years, and I can easily spend an entire day at my desk trying to get everything done. I find myself coming back into the office in the evenings, and even wandering in on weekends to try to get a jump on the upcoming week. I habitually check my email to make sure nothing’s come up that requires my attention.

Or maybe it’s just that I like, and value, my job.

But not all telecommuters are quite as fired up to get things done at home, at

  • Call-backs Simplify File IO

    September 21, 2011 Bruce Guetzkow

Note: The code accompanying this article is available for download here.

Writing subfile programs to display a list of data elements is a task most IBM i programmers have done countless times. It can be tedious and extremely repetitive, especially if you are listing information from the same file in multiple programs. Since the logic is nearly identical in all of those programs, wouldn’t it be great if we could put some or all of it into a service program that could be used in many places?

The part of the process that is common to all of those

  • A Better Way to Display Quick 5250 Messages in RPG

    September 21, 2011 Hey, Mike

Note: The code accompanying this article is available for download here.

Here are a couple of code snippets containing a call to the QUILNGTX API that does a much better job than the DSPLY opcode. This API has been around for a long time (before/free), and we wrapped it into a service program procedure to make it easier to use.

As you can see from the included code sample, it only takes a character work variable to contain the text to display, and a call to the ShowText subprocedure to display a message. It shows a pop-up box

  • Running Down Cache Battery Rumors and More on Damaged Objects

    September 21, 2011 Hey, Joe

I read your article about changing iSeries disk caching batteries. You said that iSeries administrators should call IBM to send out new batteries, and then schedule an IBM service call for replacement. Is this considered standard IBM maintenance or are batteries a consumable item that is billable? I’ve heard rumors of changes in IBM’s policy, where they are starting to charge for batteries…

    –Brian

With some help, I ran this issue past both an IBM Certified Engineer (CE) and someone in IBM CE dispatch. Both people said that it was just a rumor and that cache battery maintenance falls

  • neuObjects Debuts Graphical Editor for IBM i

    September 20, 2011 Alex Woodie

Programmers who are frustrated with accessing DB2/400 from a green screen may want to check out a brand new product called neuEdit from neuObjects. The tool, which is available for a free 60-day download, gives users direct access to database records from a Windows GUI environment, enabling users to navigate DB2/400 with a mouse. neuEdit also brings reporting and printing capabilities that its developers found lacking in other tools.

The developers of neuEdit created the software after being frustrated with the database editor from IBM and editors from third-party tools developers. While DB2/400 has a reputation as a very

  • Surround Tech Brings IBM i Customers Closer to .NET Goal

    September 20, 2011 Alex Woodie

Surround Technologies comes from the AS/400 and LANSA worlds, and understands the tremendous value the platform holds for business. But the company also understands that green-screen 5250 interfaces do not cut it anymore, and that Microsoft .NET has a lot to offer IBM i shops when it comes to the user experience and Web service integration layers, which is the focus of its recently updated Accelerator for .NET product.

A good way to begin understanding Surround Tech’s Accelerator for .NET product may be to think of it as a rapid application development (RAD) tool for the .NET developer. The software,

  • Shield Drives New Features into HA4i

    September 20, 2011 Alex Woodie

The low-cost IBM i high availability solution from Shield Advanced Solutions has gotten more advanced. The latest PTF for HA4i–which became available again last week after an initial delay–introduces new features, such as an enhanced file synchronization process, a new audit process, better handling of object and spool file locks, role swap enhancements, and better management of job logs.

HA4i (formerly named RAP) is a budget-minded high availability solution based on IBM‘s remote journaling technology. The software allows customers to replicate their data and select IBM i objects from a source to a target system, and to conduct role

  • New IBM E-Commerce Bundle Offered on IBM i

    September 20, 2011 Alex Woodie

IBM yesterday announced a Power Systems-based e-commerce bundle that’s designed to help retailers drive efficiencies into their business processes, utilize Web analytics effectively, increase fulfillment, and take advantage of cross-channel selling opportunities. Called Smarter Commerce on Power Systems, the new offering is highlighted by IBM’s Power7-based hardware and WebSphere 7 e-commerce server, and gives customers the choice of IBM i, Linux, or AIX operating systems.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you’ve heard about IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative, a “big thinking” program in which Big Blue puts forward solutions that address some of the
