  • Mass Rename of IFS Files

    September 30, 2009 Hey, Ted

I find Qshell a powerful tool for manipulating IFS files, but some Qshell features make me long for my MS DOS batch file programming days. A case in point is the ability to rename files in mass. Let me show you what I mean.

I want to rename the files with a .txt extension so that they have a .csv extension instead. I only want to rename .txt files, and I only want to rename the files in a certain directory. In MS DOS, I would have used a rename command with wildcards in both arguments.

    ren *.txt *.csv

  • When PC5250 Run the Same Doesn’t Run

    September 30, 2009 Hey, Joe

In my shop, some people cannot use PC5250’s run the same function. After selecting run the same, a new PC5250 window appears and it looks like the new session is trying to start. Several messages appear in the status bar, the new session stops trying to connect, the 5250 screen goes blank, and the status bar message reads “Disconnected.” What’s up with that?

    –Any number of users

This is an amalgamated question that I occasionally get from a reader, which tells me it’s a fairly common problem. When configured correctly, PC5250’s run the same function allows you to start

  • JAMS Brings Scheduling and File Transfer Capabilities to i OS

    September 29, 2009 Alex Woodie

System i shops looking for a third-party product to help get a handle on their job scheduling and file transfer needs may want to add another vendor to their search: MVP Systems Software. Earlier this month, the Connecticut company announced a new release of its JAMS enterprise job scheduler that introduces file transfer capabilities, putting the product at the crossroads of the emerging market for managed file transfer software.

Whether a job scheduler makes sense for a company depends on the size and complexity of the company’s operations, and its tolerance for delays in the computer room. Smaller outfits

  • VAI Adds Desserts to Food Distribution Package

    September 29, 2009 Dan Burger

Food distribution companies without integrated ERP and distribution software are companies with much bigger mountains to climb when it comes to reducing operating costs and discovering new efficiencies. Here’s a situation where size doesn’t really matter. Whether small, large, simple, or complex, if your IT system combines customer service, inventory, manufacturing, route accounting, finance, and warehouse logistics management, there are obvious advantages. VAI‘s S2K for Food Distribution is a good example.

Last week the IBM i OS-based ERP company introduced added functionality to its S2K Enterprise for Food Distribution software that upgrades supply chain and customer relationship management capabilities
