  • Designing DB2 for i Stored Procedures for Simulated Array Handling

    August 5, 2009 Hey, Mike

I enjoyed your article on using .NET to access DB2 on the iSeries. I am trying to extend the functionality of our ERP software with VB.NET 2005/2008. The data is on the iSeries. I plan to use DB2 stored procedures for data retrieval. One of my main stumbling blocks is how to pass a variable number of parameters to a stored procedure. For instance, let’s say a project manager is responsible for 10 projects that have specific project numbers. He can query on one project, all 10 projects, or any variable number of projects. How does one design a stored

  • Using Free-Format Calcs with Cycle Programs

    August 5, 2009 Hey, Ted

I use free-format calculations for new development and for existing cycle-less RPG programs. However, I have responsibility for some old programs that use the RPG cycle. Is it possible for me to use free-format calcs in those programs?

    –Bill

Yes, Bill. In the detail calculations (calcs with no level indicator in columns 7 and 8), use the /FREE and /END-FREE directives as you normally would. In the following example, I have added free-format calcs that are to be executed at L1 detail time (before a new control group) and at detail time (for each input record).

    C L1 MOVE *ZERO

  • Admin Alert: Changing User Passwords on the Fly

    August 5, 2009 Joe Hertvik

It’s always helpful to have some CL code handy for various system functions that i5/OS administrators may need to perform. This week, I’m presenting one of my favorite administrative CL programs: code to change passwords and disable user profiles through a program call. Feel free to examine this code and use it in your shop whenever you need to deputize users without security administrator authority to change passwords.

    How This Code Began

Every once in awhile, I need to allow selected users without security administrator authority the ability to change a user profile password or to disable a user profile.

Think the System i business is important to Infor? Today, the ERP giant backed up its declarations of System i dedication with the surprise launch of a new customer relationship management (CRM) application written specifically for the i OS server. Called Infor CRM i Edition, the application is designed to help existing Infor ERP users by improving their customer service, running sales and marketing campaigns, and implementing new order management processes.

  • ERP Application Functionality Prompts Migration to IBM System i

    August 4, 2009 Dan Burger

Robert Scarboro didn’t set out to migrate the Windows-based ERP system at his company to the IBM System i. The project started out with a goal of adding a warehouse management system to the existing ERP system. But the way that process unfolded led him to consider options not originally on the table. Scarboro and the executive team at RefrigiWear began seeing a bigger picture and a better opportunity to enhance business. What caught their attention was the functionality offered by VAI.

Everybody knows that switching ERP systems creates some pain. It’s not easy and it’s not quick. But

  • Linoma Adds Features to i OS Encryption Utility

    August 4, 2009 Alex Woodie

System i professionals will have an easier time implementing field-level data encryption using the latest release of Linoma Software‘s Crypto Complete. Unveiled July 15, version 2.0 adds several time-saving features, including more flexibility when encrypting alphanumeric fields, more fine-toothed security access control, and pre-formatted audit reports. All told, the enhancements combine to make field-level encryption on the System i less painful.

Linoma unveiled Crypto Complete nearly two years ago as companies began implementing field-level encryption, the strongest level of encryption recommended by the Payment Cardholder Industry (PCI) group. The software uses encryption algorithms that are included in i OS,

  • IBM to Buy SPSS for $1.2 Billion

    August 4, 2009 Alex Woodie

IBM surprised the IT world last week with the announcement that it’s planning on buying business intelligence software vendor SPSS for $1.2 billion. The big “get” for Big Blue, which bought Cognos nearly two years ago for $5 billion, will be the Predictive Analytics Software (PASW) suite, a set of software products aimed at helping organizations to analyze trends and patterns hidden in their data so they can make better decisions.

Since a product re-branding initiative earlier this year, SPSS is all about the PASW. Indeed, the Chicago-based company added the PASW moniker to about 40 individual products. Only a
