System i shops that rely on New Generation Software‘s NGS-IQ suite for business intelligence and reporting functionality are about to gain several new Web features with version 7, which is due to ship in June. Customers get a new Web interface that supports the capability to drill down into reports, as well as new Web report design features that make it easier to spruce up reports with logos and hyperlinks. May 19, 2009 Alex Woodie

It’s easy to forget that Vision Solutions has other products besides i OS high availability software, considering the company has become by far the biggest i OS HA software vendor. Data Manager is a data archiving and DASD optimization tool that Vision obtained in its March 2005 acquisition of British OS/400 software house OS Solutions. The tool brings routines that help administrators to identify and purge old and obsolete data

  • IBM Gets Hybrid with Servers, Talks Up BAO Boxes

May 18, 2009 Timothy Prickett Morgan

I don’t own any IBM stock, and you probably don’t either. (Well, we probably do by virtue of the index funds most of us have at least a taste of in our 401(k) and IRA funds. But that doesn’t count.) So you might be thinking that the annual IBM Investor Day event didn’t really concern those of us who care about IBM’s system platforms. On the contrary. The annual event is one of the few times when all of IBM’s top brass are present and speaking their minds about the future.

Including Sam Palmisano, Big Blue’s president, chief executive officer,

  • Virtualization on i Boxes Depends on Consolidation, New Workloads

    May 18, 2009 Dan Burger

First of all, it really has been a pretty big deal–at least in the higher end shops where the bigger
