  • A Minor Tweak in Power 520 Pricing

October 27, 2008 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last week, IBM continued to tweak its product pricing for the Power Systems i and System i product line.

The price of the base 9407-M15 (that’s the original Power Systems Power 520 i Edition) and the 8203-E4A (that’s the converged i-AIX-Linux box announced on October 7 that has twice the Power6 cores) was dropped by $299. Then the price for the feature 7112 and 7113 deskside covers for these two boxes was raised from $300 to $599, and the price for the rack-mount drawer rail kit for these two machines was upped from $150 to $300.

    This could be the

  • Visual Explain for Run SQL Scripts

    October 22, 2008 Skip Marchesani

The Run SQL Scripts function, a.k.a. the SQL Script Center or Script Center, allows the user to execute all or a subset of a script that contains one or more SQL statements and/or batch CL commands. It is part of the Navigator Database function and is an extremely powerful and flexible tool with lots of function that can have a very positive impact on application developer productivity.

One of these functions is Visual Explain, which is used to investigate and improve the performance of SQL statements. Visual Explain creates a query graph or diagram that graphically displays the execution of

  • SQL Quickly and Dirtily Extracts a Field from a CSV File

    October 22, 2008 Ted Holt

A colleague and I were recently tracking the way data progresses through a poorly documented information system. We were trying to determine at which point in the process a certain field’s decimal positions were being discarded. We began at the beginning, which happened to be a CSV file from a PC-based system. How could we quickly determine whether or not the CSV file had values in the decimal positions of the seventh field?

We used SQL. I’ll provide a simple illustration. Here are the commands, in case you want to try this yourself.

Let’s first create a CSV file we

  • Healing Failed Windows-i5/OS FTP Transfers

    October 22, 2008 Hey, Joe

I tried running the attached FTP script to automatically transfer AS/400 Integrated File System (AS/400 IFS) files to a Windows server, but I can’t get it to work. I can run my transfer commands manually but not automatically. Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong?

    –Dave

Thanks, Dave. I’ll give it a shot. Here’s the FTP script that you sent me.

    OPEN system_name
    USERNAME
    PASSWORD
    CD /ifs_directory_name
    LCD C:directory_name
    MGET *.*
    QUIT

Here’s the Windows FTP command that you’re using to run the script.

    ftp -s:getfile.scr system_name

Once you run the command, you get the following FTP error:

  • Is Java the AS/400’s Final Lifeline?

    October 21, 2008 Alex Woodie

For the first 10 years that IBM pressed Java onto its AS/400 installed based, the programming language was received with boos and sneers. “Why would we spend millions to retool in Java when RPG works just fine?” was the near-universal response. But today, with Power Systems server sales plummeting, RPG programmers retiring and dying, and serious questions about the value of the platform in a Web-connected world, i OS application developers appear to be looking now to Java as a means of survival.

There are few platforms today that bear the same connections that RPG and the Power Systems server

  • Infor ERP LX Adds Compliance and Language Features, SOA Enablement

    October 21, 2008 Dan Burger

At the top of the list are capabilities relating to regulatory compliance and support for multiple languages in a single instance database. The LX product line was once known as BPCS and is often referred to by that name. It’s a bastion of the IBM System i installed base.

Among the core business processes that are included in the Infor LX suite are manufacturing, logistics, channel management, customer relationships,

  • Shield Gets Closer to Full HA with RAP 3.1

    October 21, 2008 Alex Woodie

With the launch of Receiver Apply Program (RAP) version 3.1 earlier this year, Shield Advanced Solutions has narrowed the gap between its remote journaling-based product and high availability (HA) products that have been established in the market for years. The capability to automate the switch-over process and reverse the flow of journaling is perhaps the most important new feature in RAP 3.1 bringing the product closer to feature parity with other HA solutions.

Shield launched RAP in April 2007 to provide an alternative to i OS high availability software, which the company felt was too feature rich and too expensive

  • IT Chiefs Don’t Care About Software Quality, Survey Says

    October 21, 2008 Alex Woodie

More than 40 percent of CIOs and senior IT executives participating in a recent opinion survey indicated they don’t care at all or care very little about the quality of their companies’ software, according to Original Software, the developer of software testing tools that funded the survey and recently released its findings.

Original’s opinion poll, which was conducted on board a cruise ship during the recent Richmond Events 2008 CIO Forum, was not a scientific survey. The company did not disclose the number of people it polled, which would allow the calculation of a measurable rate of error. Nonetheless,

    October 21, 2008 Alex Woodie

Have a teeth-gnashing, ulcer-inducing, or soul-sapping programming tale to tell? Or perhaps an uplifting story of a miraculous turnaround to meet a development project deadline with just seconds to spare? Either way, application lifecycle management (ALM) software vendor Aldon welcomes your story, and will be doling out prizes as part of its “Turkey Awards,” which was announced last week.

There are two categories for the Turkey Awards, with different requirements for entering. Aldon welcomes programming horror stories of the worst type in the Most Frightening Development Nightmare category, which is open to everybody. There is no set timeframe for when
