  • IBM Promotes the i–iPhone, That Is

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

IBM became the latest high-tech company to jump on the iPhone bandwagon last week when it announced new software, called iNotes ultralite, for accessing Lotus Notes and Domino software from the ever-present Apple handheld device. While the iNotes ultralite software has been received well among businesses, IBM continues to ignore its own business-centric computing platform, the IBM i.

iNotes, of course, is not a new product for IBM. The technology behemoth has been selling a version of Notes that works in a Web browser under the iNotes brand since at least 2001, a search of the IT Jungle archives will

  • Valid Gets IBM Certification for i OS-Based Biometric System

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

Valid Technologies last month announced that it has received certification from IBM for using its i OS-based biometric authentication system with two Tivoli identity- and access-control products. The certification will allow organizations to ditch the use of passwords and tokens for authenticating log-ins for Web applications, and instead rely on peoples’ fingerprints to serve as the keys for entry.

Valid Secure Systems Authentication, or VSSA, is an i OS application that stores data about people’s fingerprints (not the fingerprints themselves) and provides the hooks into third-party authentication mechanisms. It has received the “Ready for IBM Tivoli” validation for Tivoli Identity

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

Impart Solutions, a Chicago-based software company, is targeting users of older RPG-based ERP applications, including JD Edwards World, System 21, and BPCS, with an open-source ERP application that uses the software as a service (SaaS) delivery model. October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

TMW Systems last week launched a new release of TMW Imaging, a document management system that plugs into its dispatching solutions for trucking companies. With version 3.1, the company has added several fax and e-mail related features that should prove to be time-savers for adopting companies.

TMW Imaging was developed by TMW Systems to address specific needs of trucking companies that use the vendor’s Windows and i OS-based dispatching systems, including TruckMate (Windows), TMWSuite (Windows), and TL2000 (i OS). • Texas Company Gets Good Returns with Aldon Help Desk Solution

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

The installation of Aldon Community Manager, a Windows-based helpdesk package, is paying dividends for SWBC, a Texas-based financial services company. With the product’s capability to track bug reports and user wishes from request to resolution, while fostering development of SWBC’s i OS and Windows developers along the way, the company reports that its development organization has never run more smoothly.

  • InfoPrint Goes for Printer Efficiency with ‘Productivity Tracker’

    October 7, 2008 Alex Woodie

InfoPrint Solutions Company, the joint venture between IBM and Ricoh, last week launched a new release of the Productivity Tracker, a piece of software designed to optimize print operations, maximize printer utilization, and minimize labor costs for commercial printers.

Companies with large production printing operations have invested a lot of money into their printers, and cannot afford to let them stand idle for too long. Thanks to Productivity Tracker, they can collect relevant production data from compatible printers (InfoPrint 4000, 4100, and 5000 series) into a DB2 database, and then run queries against the data.

    The software allows

Based in McLean, Virginia, LogiXML fashions itself one of a new breed of BI software vendors that have latched onto the AJAX user interface resolution. The company markets a suite of Windows-based BI tools that includes managed and ad hoc reporting, ETL, and OLAP capabilities. At about $72,000 for the suite, the software is not cheap (although cheaper than the tier-one BI vendors), but the user-friendly Web-based

IT Jungle has confirmed that Help/Systems and its private equity backer, the Audax Group, have acquired Bytware, the developer of security and management tools for the i OS platform. The purchase, for which the companies plan no formal announcement, comes just a month after the combination of Help/Systems and Audax snapped up i OS security tool vendor PowerTech, and lays the groundwork for more acquisitions in the months ahead.

A tip from an IT Jungle reader prompted Help/Systems to confirm speculation that the privately held Reno, Nevada, company had become the latest i OS software vendor to

  • The Power Systems 570 i Edition Versus Big Windows Boxes

October 6, 2008 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Now that Intel has its “Dunnington” six-core Xeon processor into the field, it would seem to be a good time to see how the Power Systems 570 i Edition servers stack up against Windows machines equipped with enterprise-class hardware features and systems software. It is a good time, with the fourth quarter under way and IT shops looking to buy–or not, as the case may be. Unless, of course, you were looking for some good news on the i pricing front.

Aye yi yi yi yi, Power Systems i.

October 6, 2008 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last week, Ross Mauri, the general manager of the Power Systems division, published an open letter to the i half of the merged System i and System p communities. The open letter follows a few weeks after IBM hosted two Power Systems Technical Universities in Chicago, one for the i base and the other for the AIX and Linux bases. Given the state of the global economy, the letter was meant to be reassuring to IBM’s 200,000-strong customer base, which spans most industries and countries.

In the wake of technical conferences, there is always a lot of talk about what
