January 13, 2025 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Welcome to 2025, everybody. • CICS Transaction Server For IBM i Is Sunsetted

September 16, 2024 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Way back during the Y2K crisis at the turn of the century, there were a lot of IBM mainframe shops that decided to port their COBOL applications and their related CICS transaction monitoring software to OS/400 rather than try to move to a new language and a new transaction monitor.

Mainframe COBOL and CICS are a bit different from OS/400 – and now IBM i – COBOL and CICS, but there was enough similarity that companies with large COBOL/CICS estates could make the jump from the ES/9000 to the AS/400 and IBM i platform, and thousands of such companies – …

  • How Long Before Big Blue Brings Code Assist To IBM i?

August 23, 2023 Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM Research and Big Blue’s Software group have been collaborating to bring generative AI capabilities to market through the Watsonx stack of large language models and related tools. Watsonx is a basis for customers to create customized LLMs based on data from their own businesses and to integrate the quasi-cognitive capabilities of LLMs into their applications.

  • Performance Management: A Personal History, And Turning A New Page

    April 10, 2023 Doug Mewmaw

The term “performance management” is broad, comprehensive, and uniquely personal depending upon the system, situation, and experience of the user defining it. I stumbled into the world of performance management early into my career, without even knowing it. As I reflect back on my career, it is also natural to reflect upon the history of performance management.

I thought this reflection might be interesting to not only the old pros out there but also the new guys just coming into the industry. I have been fortunate to be on an interesting journey, and one that is about to change not …

    November 28, 2022 Alex Woodie

IBM last week sued Micro Focus over the alleged theft and reverse-engineering of its CICS software that runs on IBM’s mainframe systems. Micro Focus denied the claim, stating it believes it is “without merit.”

In IBM’s suit, which was filed November 21 in U.S. District Court in New York, Big Blue alleges that Micro Focus illegally copied its IBM CICS Transaction Server for z/OS software and reverse engineered it to create the Micro Focus Enterprise Server and Micro Focus Enterprise Developer products.

In its lawsuit, which you can read here, IBM says Micro Focus took advantage of a …

  • AWS Offers Mainframe Migration Service. Is IBM i Next?

    December 6, 2021 Alex Woodie

Amazon Web Services, the world’s largest cloud service provider, last week unveiled a new service to help IBM mainframe customers modernize their workloads and move them to the cloud. Will the cloud giant, which says it’s completely driven by the needs of its customers, launch a similar service for midrange workloads running on IBM i?

AWS Mainframe Modernization is a new service AWS launched at its re:Invent conference last week that aims at making it “faster and easier to migrate mainframe and legacy workload to the cloud.” In addition to AWS components, the service includes roles for systems integrators, such …
