  • Cybersecurity Still Top IBM i Concern, But AI And Others Are Creeping Up

    January 27, 2025 Alex Woodie

Fortra last week formally released its 2025 IBM i Marketplace Survey results, which marks the start of the second decade of analysis into the IBM i community. In the closely watched Top Concerns component, there were minor changes in the top four items, led by cybersecurity for the ninth straight year. But what’s notable in 2025 is that there’s movement at the bottom of the list, indicating heightened interest in items such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.

IBM i users from around the world took Fortra’s annual IBM i Marketplace Survey in late 2024 – 250 of them …

  • Future-Proof Your Data Strategy With LANSA BI

    July 22, 2024 Stephen Strake

Last October, with no warning at all, IBM suddenly pulled the plug on its Db2 Web Query business intelligence tool for the IBM i platform. This left a lot of customers in the lurch, since Db2 Web Query is based on but very different from the WebFOCUS business intelligence tool from Information Builders.

IBM and Information Builders, we later learned, could not come to terms on how to re-license the WebFOCUS engine at the heart of Db2 Web Query, and thus far, IBM has not provided an alternative BI platform or a migration tool for any third-party applications.

    The upshot …

  • Ibi Reaches Out to D2b Web Query Customers, Discusses Cause of Breakup

    March 25, 2024 Alex Woodie

Nearly six months after ibi and IBM abruptly ended their OEM relationship, ibi is now reaching out to Db2 Web Query customers and encouraging them to license the business intelligence product it was based on, its own WebFOCUS suite. An executive with ibi also provided IT Jungle with some insight into the source of the breakup and what its IBM i customers can expect going forward.

On the same day that IBM was unveiling the Fall 2023 Technology Refresh last October, it made an unexpected announcement that shocked the IBM i community: It would no longer sell Db2 Web …

  • More Db2 Web Query Alternatives, And An Update

    March 11, 2024 Alex Woodie

It has been five months since IBM abruptly killed off Db2 Web Query, the IBM i-based suite of business intelligence tools that Big Blue OEMed from Information Builders. Some customers have already settled on a replacement, but many others are still combing the market looking for a good fit.

The product that is arguably the most well-positioned to replace Db2 Web Query is WebFOCUS, the Information Builders product on which Db2 Web Query is based. IBM had an OEM agreement with the New York-based company for more 15 years before it abruptly ended in October.

  • More Critical Security Vulns Reported In IBM i Components

    March 4, 2024 Alex Woodie

The run of serious security vulnerabilities in IBM i components continues in early 2024, as IBM reported 10 new flaws exist across OpenSSH, the Apache Web Server, ISC, and Facsimile Support for IBM i in February and early March. All of the flaws impact IBM i 7.2 through 7.5 and all have been patched by IBM via PTFs.

The most critical of the recent batch of security flaws exists in OpenSSH, the open source security utility for establishing encrypted communications between hosts and clients. As described by IBM in this February 23 security bulletin, the vulnerability (CVE-2023-51385) is caused …

  • IBM Retired Db2 Web Query; It’s Time You Did, Too

    February 5, 2024 Bill Langston

Just as you were returning to work to begin the new year, IBM published a security bulletin alerting Db2 Web Query customers that the software is “vulnerable to a remote attacker bypassing security restrictions or executing arbitrary code, to a local authenticated attacker obtaining sensitive information, or to denial of service.” The Four Hundred reported on the vulnerability in detail here.

The security bulletin only references release 2.4.0 of the now withdrawn Db2 Web Query software, but we suspect that is only because IBM doesn’t test unsupported releases. We believe the security vulnerabilities listed in the bulletin also exist …

  • IBM Patches a Slew of Security Vulns in Db2 Web Query

    January 10, 2024 Alex Woodie

If you haven’t started your migration off Db2 Web Query, you might want to accelerate your planning, as IBM last week disclosed a slew of security vulnerabilities in the soon-to-be-discontinued product, two of which are the critical variety and four of which have high severity ratings. IBM has issued patches for all of the flaws for the product running on IBM i 7.4 and 7.5.

On January 3, IBM disclosed a total of eight security vulnerabilities in Db2 Web Query, the IBM i-based data warehousing and business analytics tool that it OEM’ed from TIBCO’s Information Builders subsidiary, and which …

    January

The top concern of IBM i professionals, according to Fortra’s annual IBM i Marketplace Study, was once again security, a position it has held for six straight years. The latest crop of IBM Champions unveiled in January featured about 90 members from the IBM i community, out of a total of 839 for the year. Is …

  • IBM, TIBCO Remain Mum on Db2 Web Query Future

    November 1, 2023 Alex Woodie

While Db2 Web Query users are left hanging in the wind without any official way forward to protect their investments in the product, IBM and TIBCO have yet to make any public announcements about how to support these IBM i customers moving forward.

IBM shocked the midrange last month when it announced the sudden end of life of Db2 Web Query, the IBM i-based analytics tool that was largely based on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version of the WebFOCUS product originally developed by Information Builders and now owned by TIBCO.

The October 10 announcement – the same day …
