  • Summer of IBM i Vulnerabilities

    September 18, 2024 Alex Woodie

IBM has patched more than two dozen software vulnerabilities in the IBM i stack over the past few months, including flaws in Merlin, MQ, OpenSSH, the Java stack, Db2, Performance Tools, and the HTTP Server (the one powered by Apache). Nine of the security vulnerabilities carry CVSS Base scores of 7 or higher, while one is above 8, making these serious security threats. If you haven’t applied the patches yet, you’re encouraged to do it soon.

Working backwards from the most recent security bulletins, we start with September 5, when IBM issued patches for three vulnerabilities in Merlin, which officially …

  • Some Thoughts On Big Blue’s GenAI Strategy For IBM i

August 12, 2024 Timothy Prickett Morgan

In a world that has gone half mad with generative AI, it is refreshing to see the people who control the IBM i platform being skeptical, hopeful, and practical about how the technology might be used to help the companies who choose Power Systems running IBM i as the platform for their mission critical applications.

IBM Rochester has always been practical and often innovative when it comes to adopting hardware and software technologies, so the strategy that IBM i chief technology officer Steve Will laid out in a recent IBM i & AI – Strategy & Update as part of …

  • Future-Proof Your Data Strategy With LANSA BI

    July 22, 2024 Stephen Strake

Last October, with no warning at all, IBM suddenly pulled the plug on its Db2 Web Query business intelligence tool for the IBM i platform. This left a lot of customers in the lurch, since Db2 Web Query is based on but very different from the WebFOCUS business intelligence tool from Information Builders.

IBM and Information Builders, we later learned, could not come to terms on how to re-license the WebFOCUS engine at the heart of Db2 Web Query, and thus far, IBM has not provided an alternative BI platform or a migration tool for any third-party applications.

    The upshot …

  • IBM Bolsters Data and App Integration with webMethods, StreamSets Acquisitions

    July 10, 2024 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops are among the customers that could benefit from IBM’s completion of its acquisition of webMethods and StreamSets, which it announced last week.

In mid-December, IBM announced an agreement had been reached with Software AG and Silver Lake, the private equity firm that owned a majority of Software AG, to acquire webMethods and StreamSets for €2.13 billion, or $2.32 billion per the conversation rate at the time.

The two deals significantly bolster IBM offerings in the fields of data and application integration, which are areas of growing concern due to the rising popularity of artificial intelligence and the …

  • Guru: Web Concepts For The RPG Developer, Part 2

    June 10, 2024 Chris Ringer

Hello again! Part 1 of Web Concepts for the RPG Developer was an introduction on how to build components in an HTTP request and I hope you enjoyed it. Part 2 is just a continuation of that vast topic because there is so much to learn. I encourage you to click on the links in this article and explore on your own too.

    JSON

A web API endpoint may require the data in the body of an HTTP POST request to be constructed as JSON (“jay sahn,” short for JavaScript Object Notation). JSON is formatted text (a string) containing key:value …

  • IBM Developing AI Coding Assistant for IBM i

    May 22, 2024 Alex Woodie

During his keynote presentation at the POWERUp 2024 conference Monday, IBM i CTO Steve Will announced that IBM is actively exploring ways to incorporate generative AI into the IBM i platform. The most promising of three individual but related projects is a plan to build a large language model (LLM)-powered coding assistant for IBM i that will initially provide three functions to support RPG development, with more expected in the future.

The genesis of the coding assisting project for RPG, which doesn’t have a name yet, can be traced to last year’s launch of watsonx Code Assistant for Z, which …

  • Guru: Testing URLs With HTTP_GET_VERBOSE

    May 20, 2024 Gregory Simmons

In my previous article Fooling around with SQL and RPG, I explored having a little fun with the HTTP_GET function to fetch a witty Dad Joke from https://icanhazdadjoke.com/. In this article, I want to demonstrate a more practical use of this great function. Or should I say, another version of HTTP_GET, that is HTTP_GET_VERBOSE, which also was introduced to us by the DB2 team in V7R3.

In its simplest implementation, I can insert the URL I want to test into an SQL statement:

    select *
    from table(QSYS2.HTTP_GET_VERBOSE('https://icanhazdadjoke.com/',''))

I will later want to run this embedded in an RPG …

  • Precisely Streams IBM i Data Into Amazon’s New Db2 Service

    April 8, 2024 Alex Woodie

Amid the torrent of news that Amazon Web Services unveiled at its re:Invent show four months ago was RDS for Db2, a new hosted relational data service based on IBM’s database. Amazon Web Services offers the Linux, Unix, and Windows (LUW) variant of Db2, but thanks to a new connector unveiled by Precisely last week, IBM i and mainframe shops have a way to replicate their data into it.

Amazon RDS is among the cloud giant’s most popular services, and likely one of the most popular IT services ever created. According to one estimate, Amazon RDS brings in $7 billion …

  • Ibi Reaches Out to D2b Web Query Customers, Discusses Cause of Breakup

    March 25, 2024 Alex Woodie

Nearly six months after ibi and IBM abruptly ended their OEM relationship, ibi is now reaching out to Db2 Web Query customers and encouraging them to license the business intelligence product it was based on, its own WebFOCUS suite. An executive with ibi also provided IT Jungle with some insight into the source of the breakup and what its IBM i customers can expect going forward.

On the same day that IBM was unveiling the Fall 2023 Technology Refresh last October, it made an unexpected announcement that shocked the IBM i community: It would no longer sell Db2 Web …
