    October 9, 2024 Alex Woodie

IBM is gearing up to begin delivery of the tenth generation of the DS8000, its high-end storage arrays for IBM i, AIX, z/OS, and other servers. Due to ship October 25, the upgraded DS8000 features a number of features designed to enhance data storage in z/OS mainframe environments, but IBM i shops will also see some benefits, too.

Now in its 20th year, the DS8000 still roams the highest echelons of storage area networks (SAN) for large enterprises. Built with high availability and performance in mind, the DS8000 is designed to power the most important applications for the biggest companies …

  • More Price Hikes From IBM, Now For High End Storage

May 16, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

The price increases at IBM just keep coming as the company passes on higher component costs, and very likely higher manufacturing and support costs, that it is experiencing thanks to the coronavirus pandemic on to customers. Now we are seeing higher prices on high-end external storage.

We have covered a number of IBM’s recent price hikes in the past several weeks, which you can see in the Related Stories section at the end of this report. But to characterize them briefly to put the new price increases into context, we have seen inflation in the prices for certain Power9 and …

Security has been the number one concern of survey-takers for the past five years, during which security has garnered anywhere from 69 percent to 75 percent of respondents’ votes.

  • Log4j Hits Heritage Version of Navigator for i – No Patch Coming

    January 12, 2022 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops running the old version of the Navigator for i client should be aware that the software is vulnerable to the Log4j security vulnerability, and there will be no patch to fix it, IBM says in a new security bulletin. There will, however, be fixes coming to other vulnerable components, including IWS, IAS, and IBM i Access Client Solutions (ACS), IBM says.

Just before we hit the holiday break, the extremely severe Apache Log4j security vulnerability was disclosed to the world, resulting in a frantic effort to patch servers, desktops, refrigerators – just about anything with a …

  • PowerHA Updates Focus on Integration and Automation

    May 13, 2020 Alex Woodie

Despite the introduction of Db2 Mirror last year, PowerHA remains a critical component ensuring the high availability and disaster recoverability for thousands of IBM i shops around the world. Recent updates, including the delivery of PowerHA version 7.4 in the second half of 2019 and a minor update delivered in March 2020, have focused on bolstering the product’s integration with Db2 Mirror, as well as HyperSwap in the DS8000. Automation, monitoring, and usability have also been improved.

Brian Nordland, the PowerHA technical product manager with HelpSystems (which develops the product on behalf of IBM) recently updated the IBM i …

  • IBM Lab Services: Your IBM i All-Star Team

    September 16, 2019 Alex Woodie

It can be difficult to deploy brand new, cutting-edge technology on an IBM i server for the very first time. Take Db2 Mirror, for example. IBM just released it two months ago, and nobody has much experience deploying it in a production setting as yet. This is exactly the sort of project that spurred IBM to create Lab Services.

Lab Services is an All-Star team of IBM consultants who are called upon to deploy the newest or most complex technologies. In addition to high availability, Lab Services consultants are engaged in projects around cloud and hybrid cloud, database modernization, and …

  • IBM Flashes the Cache On External Storage

    September 11, 2017 Alex Woodie

IBM put more a little flash in its storage, specifically its high-end DS8000 arrays, which got new solid state drive options that will boost raw flash storage close to 3 petabytes in a single installation. Big Blue also cached in with its Storwize V7000, which now features up to 256 GB of RAM, among other new features.

Let’s begin the news with the Storwize V7000, which is an X86-based storage system that’s becoming increasingly popular among midsize and large IBM i shops that are looking to consolidate storage but who can’t justify the added expense and complexity of the high-end …
