  • Java 17 Now GA for IBM i and WebSphere Gets Company

    May 17, 2023 Alex Woodie

Java 17 is now available on IBM i, IBM announced last month, bringing the first major Java enhancement since Java 11 to the platform. The Java-based Web application server environment is also evolving on IBM i, as Big Blue adds more options besides WebSphere.

The long-expected introduction of Java 17 on IBM i is finally here, and was delivered as part of the recent IBM Technology Refresh (TR) cycle, which brought us IBM i 7.5 TR2 and 7.4 TR8. IBM is now supporting the latest 64-bit Java development kit (JDK), dubbed IBM Technology for Java 17, with its 5770JV1 …

  • Support For Java 7 Ending WAS 8.5 On IBM i

    July 18, 2022 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops that are running the traditional version of WebSphere Application Server 8.5 atop a Java 7 codebase will need to upgrade to Java 8 or risk running out of support from IBM.

At the end of July, IBM will cease to support WAS Traditional 8.5 running on JDK 7.0/7.1. Customers will need to upgrade their WAS 8.5 environments to JDK 8.0 to maintain support with IBM. IBM currently provides full support for WAS 8.5 and WAS 9.0 running on JDK 8.0. You can read more about this on the Official Support Statement for the IBM WebSphere Application Server …

  • IBM i Slated to Support Java 11

    July 25, 2018 Alex Woodie

Don’t look now, but Java is in the midst of a major upheaval that will not change not only how the programming language is used by the wider world, but also how it’s used on the IBM i platform. For those running Java on the midrange platform, the forthcoming release of Java 11 is the one to watch.

While Java has (sort of) been open source since Sun Microsystems released the object-oriented language into the world 27 years ago, it took much more solid steps toward being a true open source project last year when Oracle announced plans to release …

  • Pay Attention To JDK And WebSphere Release Support

April 2, 2018 Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM i shops don’t have to use Big Blue’s WebSphere Application Server middleware to create Java, since some of the Java functions are built into the Apache Web server built into the operating system and open source programs like the Tomcat server, while not still supported, are nonetheless sometimes still used. Still other shops don’t go for the full-on WebSphere Application Server, but use the Express Edition that is bundled on the machine to provide a certain level of automation for Java workloads.

IBM has been warning customers that they have to keep current on Java Development Kit (JDK) releases, …

  • IBM Patches 28 More Security Vulns In JDK

    October 4, 2017 Alex Woodie

IBM on Saturday released patches to fix 28 flaws in the Java Development Kit (JDK) that ships with the IBM i operating system. Almost all of the flaws originated in Oracle’s underlying Java Standard Edition (SE) kit, and many of them are considered very severe.

Twenty-seven of the 28 flaws impact the IBM SDK Java Technology Edition software in all releases of IBM i, from version 6.1 to version 7.3, according to the September 28 security bulletin. The patches released by IBM fix the problems in all of these releases. While i5/OS V5R4 is likely impacted too, IBM will …
