  • Manta Announces New RDP Training Series

    May 20, 2013 Jenny Thomas

If you’re looking for some training for IBM‘s Rational Developer for Power Systems (RDP), you know it can be hard to come by. But the fact of the matter is there are plenty of businesses that need people to maintain programs in RDP. The good folks at Manta Technologies have some good news if you’re in that category: A new Manta series covering the most popular IDE for IBM i application development.

“There has been a large demand from our customers for RDP, we have had courses on all the predecessors to it, so it was time,” said Bill Hansen, president of Manta. “There are still people in IBM i environments on green screens who are finally getting around to using it on a PC.”

An integrated development environment, or IDE, is of course a collection of tools that includes the editors, compilers, and debuggers that and are available to a programmer through a common interface. This new Manta series will teach students how to use RDP to write, compile, and debug IBM i programs from a PC.

Hansen said the RDP series replaces Manta’s existing WebSphere Development Studio Client (WDSc) series. “Another change that IBM made was to remove the WebFacing tool from WDSc and make it part of the HATS product,” he said. “We decided to drop the WebFacing course rather than to update it. The popularity of this tool has trailed off in recent years.”

Hansen did say he can still accommodate customers who still want the WDSc series.

The new RDP series will take students seven to 10 hours to complete and includes an introduction to RDP, as well as courses on using the Remote System Explorer (RSE), using the Integrated i Debugger, and using Rational Developer for Power Systems (RDP).

In addition to the RDP series, Manta has been busy going through the course library and has completed the 7.1 update for the entire library. That means Manta’s courses run the gamut of what’s out there. “So no matter what release you’re on, we are teaching the skills you need,” Hansen said.

Back in March, Hansen talked about the needs of his average customer, and some of the changes he has noticed in recent years. One important trend is how the onus of paying for training is falling to the individual, and Hansen takes that into consideration when pricing out Manta’s courses. So if you’re not able to get your company to spring for the training you want or need, Hansen strives to make the training he offers affordable, and since all of the training is done online, there are no additional travel expenses to consider. For the new RDP series, a one-year, single-user license for the series is available for $324. All Manta series include free student reference guides (in PDF format), competency exams, and student administration reporting and control software.
