IBM Trims the Power Systems Catalog Some More

Well, you can tell that the Power7 generation of Power Systems machines will soon be in full swing because IBM has taken the scissors to the i-related product catalog again.

In announcement letter 910-151, IBM said last week that it would be withdrawing its Power 560 (a midrange machine that scaled from four to 16 Power6 cores) and Power 570 (which ranged from two to 32 cores, either Power6 or Power6+, in a one to four chassis setup). As of January 7, 2011, IBM will no longer sell these two machines.

A slew of features for various Power-based servers will head for the pearly gates on October 29 of this year, including machine code for Hardware Management Consoles from the Power4 and Power5 generations, a bunch of cables of all kinds, some old DDR2 memory modules and disks for selected machines, and if you look carefully, the three Smart Cube machines based on the Power 520 servers (with one, two, or four cores) using the Power6 processors are also getting the chop just before Halloween. On November 26, a bunch of UltraSCSI cables bite the dust, as do 146 GB 15K RPM disk kits for Power 590 and Power 595 servers.

In announcement letter 910-140, you will see that the External xSeries Attachment features for linking outboard IBM System x servers to iSeries and System i machines so they can share storage are getting the axe on October 29 as well, and so is the HSL OptiConnect feature. On November 29, a whole bunch of other cables meet their maker, as does the feature 8968 processor card for the Power 595, which has 2.3 GHz Power5+ chips. Processor upgrades within the Power 595 systems based on Power5 and Power5+ systems are also withdrawn, but you will always be able to activate any latent cores you have on your existing machine.
