    August 27, 2012 Dan Burger

The IBM midrange community has known John Earl for a long time. He has guided several of the top security ISVs in the IBM midrange and is one of the most well-known, well-liked, and well-respected security subject matter experts in our industry. He has also served as a director of COMMON and has shared his knowledge and advice with tens of thousands of AS/400, iSeries, and IBM i enthusiasts while speaking at local user group meetings and writing hundreds of technical articles.

Earl stepped away from his role as president and CEO of Townsend Security in March 2012 for medical reasons. Since June 2011, he has been in a hard-fought battle with a brain tumor. He has been through several therapies and treatments, and his efforts to overcome the disease continue. His wife and children are fighting alongside him.

In September, his wife Kathy is participating in a fund-raising event called the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk.

Proceeds from the walk, which will take place September 22, benefit the Pacific Northwest Region’s brain cancer research projects and also support programs and services that benefit brain cancer patients, including clinical trials, advocacy programs, and comprehensive patient care and support services in the Pacific Northwest.

The support programs provide patients and their families with access to professionals who assist them with the challenges unique to people living with brain tumors. The specialists work with patients to provide emotional support, help with logistical needs, assistance with financial or insurance issues and long-term planning, as well as accessing or scheduling complimentary therapies.

Donations that support “Team Earl” can be pledged at this link. In the team search box, type in the name Earl.

Considering the number of people in the IBM i community who know and respect John for his many years of service, it seems very probable that this cause will bring a response that will make him proud.
