Databorough Teams with Genuitec to Push Alternative Eclipse IDE

If imitation truly was the sincerest form of flattery, the IT industry would be awash in butterflies and rainbows. But it's not, and instead imitation is a tool in the Darwinian quest for survival. One of today's top imitators is Genuitec, which sells a development environment that seeks to deliver all the features of IBM's Rational Application Developer, but at a lower price. Last week Genuitec announced a new partnership with i OS modernization experts Databorough that should yield product by early 2009.

To call Genuitec an imitator of IBM is correct, but it's not the whole story. Genuitec is also a founding member of the Eclipse foundation, and has been in business since 1997. The company has been developing the J2EE development tool, MyEclipse, since 2003, and launched the MyEclipse Blue Edition earlier this year to give customers an alternative to Rational Application Developer and WebSphere Application Developer for running WebSphere Application Server 6-based applications.

Genuitec created the Blue Edition to in response to customer requests according to Maher Masri, CEO for the Flower Mound, Texas, software company. "Our users needed a product that provided popular technologies and worked with WebSphere without leaving a huge footprint," he said in a statement earlier this year.

Now, Genuitec is teaming up with System i application modernization and application re-engineering experts Databorough to deliver a version of MyEclipse Blue Edition that integrates directly into Databorough's flagship X-Analysis products. The partnership officially begins November 1, with the first round of product integrations completed in the first quarter of next year.

"By integrating MyEclipse Blue Edition into our offering, we're able to offer customers unparalleled power and choice in their migration strategies," says Stuart Milligan, vice president of business development for the English company. "The new wave of customers needs to be able to utilize the most powerful technologies, like WebSphere, in the most cost-effective manner possible, and MyEclipse Blue Edition and X-Analysis provide that unbeatable combination."

The combination of X-Analysis version 9 (which was recently released) and MyEclipse Blue Edition is expected to give System i shops another modernization option. X-Analysis will be called upon to help customers extract their RPG-based business processes and convert that back-end logic into Enterprise Java or a UML model (if they choose to not generate Java). They can then utilize MyEclipse and its collection of supported technologies (AJAX, Web services, JSP, XML, Struts, and JSF) to generate user interfaces or provide application integration.

Masri sees possibility in the partnership with Databorough. "Their extensive experience in the legacy re-engineering space is unmatched, and we look forward to mutually benefiting from the one-two punch of upgrading legacy systems and providing comprehensive, affordable, modern tooling," he says.
